I found these two definitions on the same website http://www.medterms.com: Quote: Opioid: 1. A synthetic narcotic that resembles the naturally occurring opiates. 2. Any substance that binds to or otherwise affects the opiate receptors on the surface of the cell.
Opiate: A medication or illegal drug that is either derived from the opium poppy, or that mimics the effect of an opiate (a synthetic opiate). Opiate drugs are narcotic sedatives that depress activity of the central nervous system, reduce pain, and induce sleep. Side effects may include oversedation, nausea, and constipation. Long term use of opiates can produce addiction, and overuse can cause overdose and potentially death. [sarcasm]OK, that clarified it for me.[/sarcasm] One definition is inconsistent with the other. If a medical website is confusing in it's terminology, then what hope is there for non-physicians? Also, wikipedia references, very often made here, may be correct, but remember that wikipedia is "democratically" composed and may not reflect reality. A good way to check this is to read the entries on something that you are truly an expert on, and count the inaccuracies; if you run out of fingers take off your socks and continue. Where is this endless discussion going, anyway? Next we'll be discussing the meaning of the word "is". Bob
