Is there really much difference between these two drugs? Cost? Side-effects? Availability? How well does Nalmefene work with TSM as compared to Naltrexone?

The difference is, naltrexone is available and nalmefene is not.

Sinclair has said repeatedly nalmefene will be a superior drug. For one thing, it is not metabolized by the liver and so would not come with that pesky warning that naltrexone has. I believe Sinclair also has said it has a longer half life(?)
It is not approved for anything in the U.S. Others on this board from all over the workd have looked for it. Hopefully it will be available soon.

If anyone has updated info on this, PLEASE let us know. I hope someone knows something about this I don't.

Hi Folks,

I did a bit of digging and was able to establish that, for the UK and Ireland, Danish pharmaceutical group Lundbeck has acquired the rights for nalmefene. Looking at the Lundbeck website, I discovered the following:

http://www.lundbeck.com/investor/releas ... 425_EN.asp

In the above article, it says:

"Based on the earlier trials, Lundbeck is now launching three phase III trials enrolling more than 1,800 patients randomised into groups receiving nalmefene and placebo respectively. The first two trials, in which patients are treated over a period of six months, primarily aim to demonstrate the efficacy of nalmefene, whilst the objective of the last study, in which patients are treated for 12 months, is particularly to confirm that the compound is well-tolerated. The first data from the trials are expected in the first half of 2011".

So, in the UK and Ireland, it looks as though nalmefene is at least two years away. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find out about the worldwide availability of nalmefene.

V.

Agreed. Sinclair has said that Nalmefene is a superior drug. This may have been partially directed at the better half life, but I believe it was mainly in reference to it not being metabolized in the liver.

I think it's important to note that both Eskapa and Sinclair have stated repeatedly, that 50mg of Naltrexone covers 100% of opioid receptors in most people.

It would be easy to imply from your statement that Naltrexone won't work as well as Nalmefene to extinguish our cravings, which has never been stated by the pros. :)
