I started Naltrexone (Nodict -Sun Pharma - bought over internet) a week ago. First two days I used half a tablet, then I did not use it one day and after I used two days in a row 50 mg tablet. Always taking it one hour before drinking. At the time that I had my first 50 mg tablet, I drank 10 units of alcohol. The next day, I had the most terrible nausea and headache. That day, I had a party in the evening and took another 50 mg tablet. I drank 4 units of alcohol. A day after that I was still terribly ill - nausea the whole day. After that I discontinued with Nodict and also stopped drinking for two days. I am slightly better, but still do not feel like myself. Nausea starts now midday. I also feel restless and just not myself. Did anyone experienced such sever reaction to Naltrexone?

I took Nal a few times and had side effects, and I only took 1/4 pill. I actually went off it because I was on vacation with company and could not function. I hear it goes away after awhile. I am starting TSM officially this week. I am back on my "normal" schedule. My plan is to take 1/2 a pill and have 3 drinks or less. If you drink a lot while taking Nal, it can cause horrible hangovers. You might try cutting back your dose for a few days.

Yes this side effect does usually wear off fairly quickly, taking half a dose the first few times can also help.

There's also something called a nalover which can occur at any time, and with any level of consumption, often there's no predicting it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, although I panicked when I had once quite a long way into TSM, sure it messed up my day but I used it to avoid drinking for a while.

Hope you feel better soon and can get back on track.

Thanks for your kind replies. My problem is that nausea lasted almost three days - two full days after I stopped taking Nal. It has been accompanied with occasional headache and tummy discomfort. I am afraid to go back to Nal after such a terrible side effects. I did stop drinking though and I hope that I continue drinking very little.

Tamtam - it might have been a Nal-Over not the Nal itself that caused your nausea - I too had that initially but mine went away after a few days - BUT if I have more than five drinks now, I get the worst Nal-Over ever ! I drank 5 on Monday and felt ill for two days! As far as the Nal itself goes, make sure that you take it when you have food in your tummy, and also try taking 1/4 of a tab for the first three or four times then go up to half a tab for a few times and so on ..... on the plus side, if you are feeling nauseated, then you won't be drinking ....

hugs, Maggie

Thanks Maggie - I followed your advice and am not taking 12,5 mg dose. It is much better. I can function and I also feel that I am loosing desire to drink. Actually, I now leave wine in the glass when I am drinking. I am also not thinking about the next drink. This is the biggest change. Usually, when I started drinking, I would think about the next drink while I was having the first one. As if I could not be satisfied with just one. This is how I experienced craving. This is gone now. Also, I have two small bottles of wine at home, but I did not touch them in one week. And, yes, the fact that I have so much nausea after Nal sort of takes desire to drink away.

Tamtam - things are sounding SO much better for you - great that you feel better with taking the smaller amount of Nal too - isn't it a great feeling to have that desire for AL diminish? Good luck with it all ....

Hugs, Maggie x

Today is the first day without nausea and headache. I am now taking 12,5 mg Nal. Last night I had two small beers and had no desire to have more. Switching from wine to beer sort of helps. Beer, when you drink it slowly, lasts longer and has less alcohol. I am very pleased with Nal so far and am not sure if I will increase the dosage. Since I have no cravings, I feel that I should stick with this low dosage. I wander if anyone continued on low dosage as this and never went to full dose. I am too afraid of feeling like **** again which is why I do not plan to go back to 50 mg.

Tamtam - Steve takes LDN (Low dose Nal) and is fine with it - if you Google LDN you will see that it has lots of other benefits too! As long as the Nal is working I think it is fine that you stay on the low dose - if it starts to feel that it isn't then maybe increase a little - hopefully as your body gets used to it you will not have the same SE's.

Hugs, Maggie x

I just finished my first official week on TSM. I tried Nal on Friday and took 1/2 pill (25 mg) - had 4 drinks over 4 hours. The effect on me was dramatic even at that dose. The next day I felt tired, sick tummy, terrible headache that would not go away even with ibuprofen. I tried 12.5 mg on Saturday and had only 3 drinks over 4 hours. To be honest, I did not even enjoy drinking very much but did it more out of habit and to see how I felt on the Nal. I will stay at 12.5 mg for awhile, because that dose is working for me and I can function the next day. First week - 7 drinks, 5 AF.
