I just received my Nal in the mail (River Pharmacy Canada) and after reading all of the posts, I have to admit I am anxious about side effects. Those that have had them have appeared to be quite strong, while others have little or none. Another member posted this article and I thought it was very interesting http://alcoholcontrol.info/naltrexone/. It basically provides a method to titrate the medication to find your personal, perfect dose and minimize side effects. It is important to note that the article is is written for someone who will be taking Nal as a daily RX, not for pharmacological extinction (TSM).

The method starts you out disolving the meds in water and drinking very gradually increasing doses every four hours over a period of seven days, gradually increasing as you go along. I am betting it tastes nasty! I will let you know. If combining this with TSM, I will need to drink daily...but that should not be a problem since I am drinking every day anyway :-0. Then, once I get to the regular dose, I will build in AF days.

I appreciate any thoughts anyone else has had with gradual increased dosing.

Thanks!

a few people experience bad side-effects, butt the vast majority tolerate Nal(trexone) pretty well, especially if you start with a 1/4 or 1/2 tablet & work up to the full dose over a few days

I can't really see what advantage dissolving the tablets in water would have, & yes, they taste pretty awful if you chew them or whatever, rather than just swallowing them down

as for spreading the dose out over the day in several smaller doses, I'm not sure this would give you the concentration to achieve the blocking effect

all the best

Thanks Badger and New Life. I may be rethinking my strategy here and going with cutting the tablets and starting with 1/4 dose. With the other method you have to drink 10ml to start and up to 70ml...that is much more than a quick swallow!!!!

The recommended dose is 1/2 (25 mg) for 2 days then a full dose. Most people tolerate that just fine.

I started with a 1/2 dose, then 2 hours later the 2nd 1/2, and had no problems.

Some of the people that DO report problems are mixing them with other meds.

Thank you All41. I just took my very first Naltrexone. Newlife...you are right...this pill tastes nasty. I cannot even imagine drinking it. Yuck! I was still a little nervous about side effects so I took a 1/4 and if things are okay, will take another 1/4 in a few hours. Cause once it is in...it is in! I also made sure I was super hydrated and ate some pasta before I took it. I am not on any other meds other than a few herbal supplements and vitamins.

Here I go!

I was nervous too but then pleasantly surprised that I had no SEs such as nausea, sleep problems, whatever. But the AL experience was immediately different. I wish the same for you. Let us know how you do; I'll be watching!! Newlife
