Hello,

I've been reading, but haven't posted an intro yet. I'm one of the folks who was prescribed Naltrexone incorrectly by my doctor. I was given it after detox, and told to remain abstinent. I've been successful doing so (about 8 months alcohol free), but I'm extremely interested in this method.

I'm a scientist by trade, and some other geeks and I are working on trying to spread the word of AA alternatives that are science-based, rather than faith based. Totally love this site by the way. We're looking to set up "clubhouses" because the social aspect of support that addicts/alcoholics find in AA is very useful.

Hopefully, more info coming soon!

Thanks,

Dr.Nimbus Couzin

Hi!

So, what led to your interest in extinction? It's not usually recommended for people who are happily abstinent (it doesn't always work, after all). Is abstinence a struggle, are you just interested on general principles, or something else?

Welcome to the group, also.

Yeah, dont believe the hype about TSM. You arent going to be a "normal drinker" on TSM. I could have a drink or two on TSM, but drinking on nal is about as fun as a waiting in line at the DMV.

If you are white-knuckling it, extinction will take the cravings away.

sideeffect2 is right. The "You can still drink!" line leads some people to think that they will enjoy a few and know when to quit, like normal people. That's not so.

You can still drink in the sense of consuming a beverage, but you won't feel the warm glow that we associate with alcohol. The naltrexone blocks it. That's how it's supposed to work.

The big advantage is not that you can still drink, but that when you're done you won't want to drink. The desire to drink is gradually extinguished because the reward is blocked.

At this point in time, I'm really just researching this method as a possible tool to help others. After going back and forth, getting sober, then relapsing, over and over again for years, I feel like the Sinclair Method would have been incredibly helpful for me if I could have found it five or ten years ago.

So I'm hoping to help spread the word, and help others find an alternative to AA. Basically, hoping to help people find science-based methods rather than faith-based ones. The rehab industry simply funnels people into AA/NA, and then when they relapse (which they inevitably do because prayer isn't a real treatment), they are there to charge thousands more for the patients' next stay through rehab.

Too many people are dying, while science is almost completely ignored, and quite frankly I'm sick of standing by watching...

Cheers.

Yeah, that's kinda how I feel. I'm middle-aged, my past is a wreck, and I was cured in five weeks by a treatment protocol which was already available in other countries when I graduated from high school. It's really quite disgusting that it isn't better known.

Most of the people you'll meet here are still in the process. People tend to leave once they're cured. I'm a weirdo in that respect precisely because I want to find more ways to inform people, so that they don't learn the fix decades after they learn the problem.

What kind of research are you doing? Anything we can help with, or are you scouring the medical journals?
