Hi all,
I am your garden variety wino consuming roughly a bottle a day on average supplemented with the occasional cocktail or 2 when dining out with my wife. I observe the 5 o'clock rule with very few exceptions. If I could stay at this level I would probably be OK, however I feel that I am on a slippery slope as I used to be able to take an AF day several times a week, but this seems to be less of an option recently.
I have tried to achieve a "managed control mode" using disulfiram, however it is a painful route to pursue because of the unpleasant side effects (sometimes caused by imbibing as much as 4 days after taking the pill). Also, when the occasional unexpected social drinking situation arises the choice is between taking a sip and turning bright red or making up some lame excuse for not tasting the wine.
Like many others, I believed that there must be a way to treat the addiction and learn the ability to become a social drinker while suppressing the never ending obsessive cravings. After intense googling, I stumbled upon the Sinclair Method and amongst other things discovered all of you good folks posting your various experiences and levels of success. I went ahead and read Dr. Eskapa's book as well as Claudia Christian's eye opening account of her life and addiction and decided to give it a go.
I found a physician in my area who agreed to prescribe my first round of Naltrexone in exchange for not having to listen to my rambling about the Sinclair method(!) - not a very motivating session, but at least I got "my drug". Just started a week ago and with the exception of a very vivid and scary nightmare the first night, have not felt any significant side effects (I went straight to the 50 mg dose).
In any case, I will go ahead and start posting brief updates on the "Progress Forum" and appreciate any feedback you might have for me.
Thanks to everyone for contributing to this wonderful forum - it is an inspiration!
