I'm a mid-30s guy, living in London. Common story, drinking occasionally from about 13, progressed to pubs on a Friday/Saturday from 16 and drinking a bit at home. Part time job at 16 and spent most of the proceeds in the pub. Then to university and drank merrily away for a few years, however didn't stop after that and have been drinking solidly for years.
Managed to keep a good job, partly because they are very relaxed and partly because I am disciplined enough to only drink in evenings. Wheels started coming off a few years ago with some pretty bad episodes, some drink driving, splitting up with partner, problems at work etc.
Got worried about it and have tried AA, counselling, hypnosis, acupuncture, etc. Specialised counselling was most useful, reducing drinking from about 150 units a week to 50ish. However didn’t keep up with it and so over last year have gone back to drinking heavily.
Read a lot about Naltrexone after stumbling upon it on Wikipedia, theory seems to make sense and encouraged by the discussions on this board.
Couldn’t find a doctor in UK who would either reply or knew anything about this so I ordered the tablets from India and started at the weekend. Not noticed much difference, except yesterday drank the usual two bottles of wine and still had some clarity (didn’t collapse on the sofa and wake up at 3, instead went to bed and woke up at 3…).
Look forward to getting to know you all and best of luck with your own treatment.
