Below is a question I copied here from hopeful :

"What is considered to be the cutoff/highest level/reading of liver function test that would eliminate someone from being able to take Naltrexone? I read somewhere that it may be a reading of 2 x normal reading. Is that correct? If someone's LFT is too high should they consider Nalmefene, and if so, is that available in pill or only by injection? Many thanks from a newbie looking to get started. I will be receiving my LFT results next week."

Dr Roy , leading on from that post above . I would like to mention here a liver function test readings I just received .
In fact the test was done at the end of my worst week ( week 11 )

Transaminase GOT ASAT 73 (upward limit 46)
Transaminase GPT ALAT 122 (........ " 56)

The Gamma GT is ok at 74 ( was 116 in Jan , the two above about same as in Jan.

Ultrasound showed fatty liver in Jan , Id imagine it's still there .

I really don't want to stop tsm , because I think I've got the beast on the run and am turning the corner . I had one pint of cider tonight , and nothing yesterday
On average I drink about half what I did pre sinc . At week 12 I'm not keen to stop and attempt abstinence but if someone said my readings are way to high to drink a drop ... You see the dilemna ?
I have a feeling I could probably drink around 25 units comfortably now , that's approaching safe (25 uk units = about 15 us units ) This is based on what feels increasingly manageable : to stop after 2 - 4 drinks and take 2 or 3 AF's a week .

Since it was FDA approved in Dec 1994 for alcoholism I do not know of a complaint about naltrexone damaging the liver - its upper daily limit before it stresses the liver is 300 mg / day. The initial concerns were based on DuPont Merk - which launched the medication as Revia back then and they must have wanted to cover themselves against possible litigation... in practice Sinclair's team in Finland showed improvements in liver function, depression scores, drinking and craving levels over the course of treatment and then again at 3 year follow-up where patients were averaging 9 units a week - or were abstinent.

I do not think that nalmefene is FDA approved in the US though it has been successfully trialed by Barbra Mason - among others - years ago for alcoholism. There is tak of nalmefene being approved for alcohol in the UK and EC ... but we'll have to see. I did read that Lundbeck had bought the N American rights from Biotie of Finland ... but that's about all I know on nalmefene at this point.
