If I make an appointment to see a private Doctor in the UK in order to be prescribed Naltrexone, will they write to my GP. I would like this to be private. I don't want my GP to know about it. A bit paranoid I suppose.

From what I remember I was asked if I'd like the Doctor to write to my GP, and I whole heartedly agreed because I wanted her support.

If you are going to do this without your GP knowing, please always carry the naltrexone warning cards regards adminstering painkillers or anaethesia, and remember codeine, tramadol etc will not work if you ever are prescribed them.

No, there is no obligation to inform your GP. S/he may ask you if you want your GP to be informed, but you have the right to say no.

And what UK Blond said.

Good luck!

Hi I have been to my doctors and adsis and had no luck getting the Naltrexone through these channels. If I book in to see a private doctor am I guaranteed to get the medication? If not does anyone know of any tried and tested (that work) websites to buy the stuff from. I am determined to give this method a try...

I went to see Dr Chick there are no guarantees he'll prescribe Naltrexone, and I'd be worried if he would prescribe willy nilly. He went through various options with me (I originally went to see him re baclofen which I had been using), he gave me some very good advice told me baclofen wasn't for me. I then suggested Naltrexone as per TSM and he said he'd be happy to start me off on it. I did have to do my own research but he was supportive.

As above when I showed success with TSM my GP was finally, with the assurance of the DAT able to prescribe for me.

It doesn't cost a lot in drinking terms to get started, and worth a go. Much better than rehab costs too!

Here is my understanding of the NAL situation in the UK (the information is from my NHS psychiatrist):

1. Prescribing Naltrexone for alcohol dependence has been now approved (by NICE, I think) in the UK. So if your GP doesn't know anything about NAL, it's their ignorance.
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Alcohol-mi ... tment.aspx

2. But my guess is that the use is meant to be in conjunction with abstinence, not with the Sinclair method.

3. Nalmefene will be licensed for alcohol dependence treatments in the near future as well.

Hope this helps
Anu

I got naltrexone from a private psychiatrist in Bristol. Cost a lot (£150?) to see him. (fee soon recouped in reduction in drinking!!!) He didn't specifically talk about TSM.
PM me if you want his name. He was really good.
