Like many of you on these boards, I was frustrated by the apparently non-critical approach taken by the people from who I approached for help about my drinking. I ended up seeking out numerous books about addiction and alcohol dependency, which were ultimately much more help to me than any 12 step program. So I just thought I'd recommend two of the best I've read here:

Sober for Good: New solutions for drinking problems by Anne M Fletcher
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0618219072/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1/178-4561488-2100540?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_r=0GHGPEJ4B6P632EHNWHA&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1278548962&pf_rd_i=1450589170

7 Tools to Beat Addiction by Stanton Peele
http://www.amazon.com/Tools-Beat-Addiction-Stanton-Peele/dp/1400048737/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321437432&sr=1-1

I've also heard good things about this one, which I have on order arriving soon:

The Heart of Addiction by Lance Dodes
http://www.amazon.com/Heart-Addiction-Understanding-Alcoholism-Addictive/dp/0060958030/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321437966&sr=1-1

What others can you recommend? :)

Oh! And The Cure for Alcoholism of course. Quite an important omission

Great thread, Gwyn, I liked The Heart of Addiction too but ever since I have found TSM, I can't help but wonder if they are not all basically wrong, that's not to say that some of what they write isn't right, but I now think that addiction is biochemical and not psychological, so I have to take the rest with a grain of salt. But that's just me. :)
