E-Lou, great indie singer-songwriter stuff there.

Have you ever heard Sam Cooke's "Live at Harlem Square" disc? If not, you need to check out this version of "Bring it on Home to Me." One of my favorite recordings of all time.

Hi all,

I thought I'd share one more song before I head out to Chicago for the weekend (riding a 3-day AF streak).

Song: "Chicago Promenade" by Jason Isbell
Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEZgdpzoUSw (I couldn't find the studio version [which is excellent], and I don't have any speakers on my work computer...so not sure if this version is any good)
Lyrics: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858675941/
Commentary: I think this song may be about a friend's suicide, although I have no idea what the "Chicago Promenade" actually is. For what it's worth, there's a Chase Promenade in Millenium Park (an awesome part of the city). The very first time I was in Chicago was for a 3-day concert over the summer of '08, and on the last day I got so banged up that I passed out in this promenade for about 4 hours. My friends had no idea where I was, and I ended up walking along Lake Shore Drive (pretty sure this is a highway) in the wrong lane back to my hotel. Jackass. I've been to Chicago quite a few times since then, and it remains one of my favorite cities in the world.

Good luck this weekend, everyone.

Hi all,

It seems like everyone has been having a bit of a challenging week, so I was hoping to get some distraction going by revisiting the Soundtrack thread. I thought I'd switch it up a bit and post some songs that may not speak directly to TSM-related stuff but have videos that certainly do.

Song: "The Funeral" by Band of Horses
Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMFWFhTFohk&ob=av3e
Lyrics: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858583565/
Commentary: Even though I generally have no idea what the hell Ben Bridwell is singing about (sometimes I can't even parse his grammar), I love this song - they have a lot of great stuff in their catalogue that I'd recommend. As for the video, it is pretty intense, and it scares me to death that I'll end up like the protagonist. I've no doubt that I've been close to similar situations behind the wheel. Bad stuff.

Song: "Elevator Love Letter" by Stars
Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU7KGcrD_gc
Lyrics: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858502284/
Commentary: Ah yes, one of the most underrated bands from the Great White North. I think the song itself speaks more to the loneliness and isolation of being a workaholic in a big city, but the video definitely suggests overdoing it on the surly sauce. Stars put on a great live show too, with tons of stage banter, and they really do a good job of mixing it up with the two vocalists.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a better weekend. Good luck!

-H

Hess again I love this thread!

Wife’s gone until Sunday, so your thread is entertaining me tonight, and I hope I can find a few songs you and everyone else enjoys. Besides Country which I love, but I also love Rock! So this is My Rock page… LOL

Also, to set the record straight I’m starting to search for some of my favorites with 8 units down. So I’ll count as I go… just for entertainment purposes and so I can remember the count in the morning…

Rockstar – Nickelback – drink #8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnCJtL9C ... re=related

Nothin’ but a Good Time – Poison #9
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_88L-CU7 ... ure=relmfu

Cocaine – Eric Clapton – drink #9
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdDhV45lYHU&ob=av3n

O.K. My favorite Rock and Roll Band #10 - If you never drank listening and Rocking Out to AC/DC then do it before you quit!! Lots of great Rock and Roll bands, but AC/DC definitely knows how to ROCK.

Highway to Hell – AC/DC - #11 – Got to love Angus!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3axDrXcx ... re=related

You Shook Me All Night Long – AC/DC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY6gD9oy ... re=related

For Those About to Rock We Salute You - #1 song in my book - Drink #11 & 12 – long version…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY-HfHOv ... re=related

Knocking on Heaven’s Door – Guns N Roses - #12
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcWTTs8Q ... re=related

I’ll slow it down a little – Anybody know what Black Water is? Probably close to Black Crack aka. Jagermeister… ha ha I had to swear that stuff off last year… bad, bad, bad.

Black Water – Doobie Brothers – #12
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqZ95a249p0
Hess – Commentary: funny thing is I was the only one in high school listening to the Doobie Brothers (of course I listened to AC/DC, Van Halen, etc… but my friends thought I was off my rocker listening to the Doobie’s, Kansas, etc… Then I came home from college walked into a party at my friends house, of course they were all smoking pot and the Doobie’s were playing, I lost it!!! How funny!!!

Shooting Star – Bad Company - #13 – All the world will love you! Are you ready now?? Johnny died one night, died in his bed (woo ooh) bottle whisky and sleeping tablets by his head.

Rock and Nal On!

Great thread, thanks for starting it Hess and everyone for contributing some awesome new (to me) finds. I am in a blah stage right now with music (I usually alternate w/ months of obsessive listening) so this is a great kickstart. Music is a wonderful natural high.

Not sure if these all fit the bill of "drinking songs"--they are just favorites.

Jackson Browne: Something Fine
Try to access his latest accoustic version of this, from a recent album recorded in Spain. Sorry to be so vague on the details of the album! I heard this version ONCE on WFUV (great radio station) and was blown away by his beautifully aged voice...like a fine wine...ha ha

Ryan Adams: Wonderwall
His cover of the Oasis song. Much better than the original.

Joni Mitchell: A Case of You
Supposedly this is about Neil Young. Kind of ambiguous lyrics: "I could drink a case of you, darling, and I would still be on my feet, I would still be on my feet." Was it that he didn't knock her off her feet?? Or was he a wonderful buzz that didn't destroy her? It's a lot of beer in any event!

Jim James (of My Morning Jacket): All the Best
His cover of a John Prine song--it makes me think of someone who has had to break it off with an incorrigible drunk.

Bob Dylan: Don't THink Twice It's Allright
Same sentiment as above. The most sarcastic yet tender song in the whole world.

Bruce Springsteen: Filled with Grace (?)
Off of the "Devils and Dust" album, which is beautiful through and through. I'm not sure of the actual title of the song since someone downloaded it for me w/out song titles. But it is about a man who is in bed with a prostitute, his mind shuttling back and forth between the present sordid sadness of the motel room and making love with the woman he loved, who is gone. At the end of the song the whore offers him a drink of whiskey, saying it's the "best you'll ever have" and he drinks it with her and laughs, but then says, "it wasn't the best I had, not even close."

Gin Blossoms: Hey Jealousy
"Do you think it'd be allright if I could crash here tonight, you see I'm in no shape for driving and anyway I've got no place to go..." pre TSM typical night, right?

Jeff Buckley: Lilac Wine
An ode to the pure melancholic joy of being in love with alcohol itself

I'd better stop before this consumes my whole afternoon! Thanks for a great fun way to connect and pass the time with fellow TSMers!
