Is there an "ideal" time to try for an AF-day? I think I read that it's recommended to try to do 6 drinking days, then 1 AF, but was wondering if I should try for one on the first week through willpower? Or just let it happen naturally? Any advice is welcome!

Hopeful,

It kinda depends on your history, if you don't normally have AF days, don't force one at this point. On the other hand, if you typically have some AF days during the week without white knuckling, there is nothing wrong with not drinking for a day or two. You should drink as you normally do, down the road it is a good idea to try a little willpower to see if you are really craving AL or if it is just a habit that you continue to follow. If you are a daily drinker you probably need to continue drinking daily for some time.

Thank you Diver! That makes sense. I have not had an AF-day for several months, so at this point I will probably not try to force it.

Hi bee

It's a good idea to try forcing AF days after many weeks on TSM just to test whether or not you are drinking out of habit or actually craving. I wouldn't over think it too much in the beginning of your journey, just take the pill one hour before and drink as you normally do.

Thank you Katie! I will definitely try that around Week 3-4 if it hasn't happened before. I might need one sooner though just in case because of a major work project due this week that I might have to work 'round the clock on and I will need at least one night with my faculties completely intact. We shall see if I can manage it!

I don't think there is anything wrong with an AF day, but it isn't buying you anything at this very early stage. In fact, Eskapa/Sinclair recommend frequent drinking sessions, just not to excess. The more often you drink on NAL, the quicker your addiction will be extinguished.

Where the AF days are really of value in the early days is if you are frequently hungover. The AF days translate to days without a hangover, which is good.
