Tom does not have liver problems....but dealing with his physician is like talking to a wall. He doesn't want Tom taking this medication because of potential liver damage. And what makes me mad is he was looking up Naltrexone on his computer as we were talking.

But I think I may have found a doctor to work with and we will meet with him in two weeks and I will lay it all out about the sinclair method. I have heard that this doctor is very open minded and he has experience with alcoholism and treatment...the Doctor we have now always send us to a specialist for anything and everything. But with this new Doctor I want to lay it all out and give him time to look into it and I was even going to give him the link to this board and a copy of the book and hopefully he will see that Ton is doing so much better and that to deny him Naltrexone past 3 months is a death sentence....for Tom and our family.

Well, another option if needed, River Pharmacy sells Nal for about $1.90 per pill if you purchase over 90 pills, with free shipping. Better than

The only thing I can say is that there will most likely be severe ups and downs, but over all things gradually improve.

I think the potential liver damage from nal only happens if you take more than 300mg -obviously your husband is more at risk from the drinking. So frustrating that your doctor doesn't understand this!!!!

I'm not familiar with health services in the US, but has your husband had any bloodwork done? My GP feels that 50 mg is a safe dose , but sent me for blood testing before prescribing Nal to know what was going on with my liver, she will test again in 6 months.

Thanks IAMDAVE for the pharmacy inforamtion...you don't know how much that informaiton has eased my mind...$60 a month is something we can afford if needed but keeping fingers crossed that this new Doctor will work with us and he is affiliated with a local treatment center so hopefully if we get him to understand the program he might even become yet one more enlightened doctor that can help others.

And to KatieSmiles....your doctor is correct...50mg is not a large dose and is very safe, US Doctors just don't know aboutit because the drug is so old and not being pushed by pharmacy companies becasue it is not a money maker so threfore they are leary to prescribe something that they are not familiar with. So very very sad when you see people struggling with addiction and there is a pill that can help them and yet no one knows about it. I watch these shows on TV like intervention and I see the pain these families are in and yet they keep sending them back to treatment where they have a 15% chance of success...depressing.
