i have a few questions.. im new here, tried tpamax but it made me depressed. im only 27 and if you guys could answer some of these questions id really appreciateit.. just ordered the nall..

1. a person i spoke to online said they only take the naltrexone after a beer or two, when they feel buzzed, not an hour before.. and it works for them. she was not an everyda drinker though but once in awehile went on benders for days.. so i guess it works for her.. must you take it an hour before drinking or is it possible it would work if u take it an hour after drinking?

2. the reason i ask is because i hear the naltrexone takes away the pleasure and good feelings from drinking so i was hoping to feel it from the first few... is it true that drinking just basically doesnt make you "happy" and slightly "euphoric" while on naltrexone?

3. the lady i spoke to says if she takes a naltrexone it works for her for three days after almost.. is that true , wouldit still work and be in the body for that long?

4. if the naltrexone is taken daily while drinking, does it cause cravings to decrease as topamax does and campral etc if not doing the sinclair?

4. crav

Hi horses1,

Welcome!

First, I would highly recommend you read the book: http://www.thecureforalcoholism.com

To answer your questions:

1) You should take Naltrexone one hour before drinking, not one hour after.

2) Drinking on Nalextrone feels pretty much the same.
See http://www.thesinclairmethod.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=298

3) Per Dr. Eskapa:
Quote:
Naltrexone 50 mg will block the effects of opiates and endorphins for 24 hours.
See http://www.thesinclairmethod.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=118

4) In order to realize the cure, you should follow the Sinclair method. That is what this site is all about!

Yes, please read http://www.thecureforalcoholism.com

Take Nal 1 hour BEFORE drinking, then drink as mush as you are impelled to.

Some feel that the buzz is gone. Some feel that there is no difference. Most experiences are in between the two extremes. I personally notice a difference, but it is very hard to describe. I can still get drunk, but it is not as euphoric as it once was.

I Wish you well in your recovery, my friend!

Bob

the reason i also asked about if nal does anyting to the after down feeling of drinking is bc i feel thats what makes me want to continue drinking, is to feel "normal" and not down and bored.

Nalextrone is not an antidepressant, nor will it cure your boredom! LOL! :D

It would.
Really though there is no reason to ever slip. Why risk falling back into addiction?

page 106:
Quote:
Alcoholism, by definition, is difficulty in abstaining from alcohol. And clinical trials that have instructed patients to abstain have met with more problems with complience. However, being told to take a pill before drinking is an easy command to obey.

Remember, always follow the Golden Rule, page 127:

Quote:
If you are a patient following the Sinclair Method you have only one absolute rule: take nalextrone before drinking. You must take your medication for the rest of your life - but only when you drink alcohol. Following this Golden Rule is easy to do. Always take your medication before drinking.

Hi horses1. Horse person, eh? Me too!

First off, if you read the posts here you will discover first hand that naltrexone does NOT take away the buzz. If anything, I enjoy drinking on nal b/c I still get as buzzed as ever, but I don't get falling down, black-out, stupid drunk. I am more in control. . .rather like it feels when you hit that 'zone' of drinking normally, just before going over the line - except with nal, you stay in 'the zone.' It's nice.

If you don't take the nal b/4 you drink, you will be hindering your progress. You need to commit to this process, if you truly want to be cured. Therein is the question: do you really want to be cured, or are you just playing games?

You drink b/c you're bored? Well naltrexone can't help that - but you can. Get a hobby! Do some volunteer work. Take up exercise. Whatever. . .just do something that makes you feel good.

Welcome!

Hello Horses .
There's a link between your last question there and the question about the buzz .
They're both linked in why we drink . Tsm proposes that the addictive drive in the brain goes on behind conscioousness , we're consciously concerned to get a buzz and it's often been considered the goal of drinking , many "experts" claim it's the search for the buzz that makes us do it . Now , if the units are going up among some of us this is because what we're seeking is not being satisfied , BUT what we're seeking is not the buzz on the level that counts , what we seek is the endorphin re enforcement .
The NAL blocks that re enforcement , this creates a frustration that at times can make us drink more in an attempt to get round the block . Once again this attempt to get round the block is also at a level we're not conscious of .
That's why this question of buzz is important in so far as we do like it but it's not there that the changes are going on . So if you're like some for who the buzz remains that's good , if the buzz as a different quality that's ok and worth accepting because much, much greater things are going on behind the scenes .
I hope youre with me with all this . try to read the book and in the meantime the excerpts on this site , podcast etc .
Don't misinterpret what increased units mean and note that it is part of the path, not a permanent trend .

Hi GFM AND horses 1 I agree with the above statement. I am totally more in "control" It is a very good feeling! Never once (well once! only) did I cross the line and I split a little salt! :P

Good luck horses1
