So this article mentions a drug I've never even heard of, onadansetron, that blocks the serotonin receptors instead of the opioid receptors. Maybe this drug can be used in pretty much the same way as TSM for people who don't respond well to nal.

So many exciting developments happening in the treatment of alcoholism. I'm sick of alcoholics being stigmatized for a disease that we never wanted. Maybe this research will convince people that alcoholism truly is a disease if the fix can be as simple as taking a pill.

Onadansetron is better known under the brand name Zofran. It's a powerful anti-nausea drug often given to cancer patients undergoing chemo but it's safe enough to give to pregnant mothers who have severe morning sickness as well. I had not heard that it was being used in addiction research. Because alcohol is a dirty drug that affects many pathways it's possible that some alcoholics are more serotonin mediated. Who knows the future treatment may be a cocktail that targets opioid, GABA(A,B), serotinin, glutamate, dopamine and GHB or you might be genetically tested to see which is the biggest contributor so that the med. can be targeted to the specific pathway contributing the most to your alcoholism.

Ideally, this would be mixed as trace amounts into alcoholic beverages where the drinker would recieve the physiological effects without the addictive mechanism.
