I'm back drinking in an unhealthy & (what feels like) compulsive manner (e.g., 2 cases of beer, 1/2 - to a full bottle of whiskey over a 7-day period). I'm also compounding the problem with valium intake.

I've tried AA/12X12 (uuuggghh) & SMART, & managed to rack up just under 4 years total abstinence going to AA meetings while completely ignoring the accompanying spiritual balderdash. I've tried going back to meetings & found myself shaking my head in disgust, walking out & headed to my favorite watering hole.

By any standard of testing, I fit the model of alcohol/drug abuser or dependent. But I know 12X12 is at best a band-aid for me, & with each go-round its effectiveness grows shorter.

I've had success before with buprenorphine, but the psychiatrist's prescription was pharma (including a plethora of anti-depressants & mood stabilizers), abstinence, & AA. Got over-stressed one day & went to get drunk. And I got drunk ... only I wasn't drunk (i.e., euphoric). After that, I canned meetings & pharma & went back to old faithful.

I'm more than curious about this method. It sounds Pavlovian, but I'm not so proud to think I can't learn something from a drooling dog.

Long story short: Is any one aware of MD's or Psych's who are open to the method in the NYC area. I don't own a car, so commuting is an issue.

Any help or input would be welcome. Thanks.

Pavlovian is precisely what it is. Suggest picking up the book since it's cheap and contains way more than you'd get reading here.

I can't help with doctors but know that ordering from River w/o a script is not that much more expensive than a doctor's visit and insurance copays. Right at $100 per month. Dirt cheap compared to killing yourself.

Welcome, speedy. I don't know of a NYC area doctor familiar with The Sinclair Method. Naltrexone has been proven to have no benefit in reducing craving/drinking levels when combined with forced abstinence - yet that is the way the drug is usually prescribed. Stateside MD's simply don't understand the process of pharmacalogical extinction whereby Naltrexone+Drinking=cure. Most doctors do not feel they can, in good conscious, direct an alcoholic to drink - yet the cure will only transpire if a person actively drinks alcohol while on this medication. It's a conundrum.

For this reason, people here who do go to their doctors often tell them they want the Naltrexone to help them maintain abstinence. Then they get their support, information, etc., from members of the Board, including Dr. Eskapa. The reasoning is that, once a cure has been effected, they can go back and carefully explain to their doctors what they really did, and why. Success breeds respect.

As for online pharmacies, the least expensive, reliable source for online Naltrexone is at www.alldaychemist.com. While you have to decide for yourself if you're willing to take this medication w/o medical supervision, it is a very safe drug. In fact, there's been some talk on here about trying to get one of the manufacturing drug companies to apply to the FDA for over the counter (OTC) status.

Good luck, and keep posting!

Speedy: Dr. Eskapa has been in NYC and I presume meeting with some doctors. You might PM him or ask in the "Questions for Dr. Eskapa" to see if he can give you a referral to a Sinclair-Friendly doc in NYC.
