Took husband to family Dr. last week as he was trying to stop a binge. 2 months ago he went to hospital for detox...to the tune of over $3000 once all the separate bills were tallied. Family dr said he should be proud of himself for coming in, most people do nothing. Said he had never heard of naltrexone. Asked if he wanted a flu shot. Did not prescribe anything for withdrawal nor warn of any possible health threats during withdrawal. Hub was clear he was consuming over 30 units daily on this binge.

Came home and tried to find a Dr who would treat alcoholism with naltrexone. Futile search on the phone. One suggestion to call a pharmacy and ask for names of drs who they had on record as prescribing naltrexone ...led to one Dr who we have not been able to contact. We will continue with this route and call substance abuse psychiatrists in our area.

I live in Cincinnati. Closest referral on this site is for 2 drs in Lexington. Although this site claims they will prescribe, only one is on board. The other said he uses combo of vitamins and talk therapy. Will follow up with Dr. stephen Cox if we cannot find someone closer. I have ordered the nal through the mail and we will begin by self prescribing and following the sinclair method as it is laid out. We are both very well read on the subject as well as highly educated in all approaches to alcoholism. Abstinence has worked for me but has been a complete failure for my husband.

Keeping my hopes up that the River will deliver!

Good luck and don't give up! Your husband being willing to try it is a great first step.

Try visiting a doctor and bringing the Newsweek article on NAL and other documents from legit sources that mention TSM:

What a sad story - here's your husband - ready and willing - and nothing. In another post someone was wondering about doctors/drug manufacturers in India and the safety of ordering from there....what a joke when we have doctors here who are not even willing to READ one short study, or heaven's to Betsy, a whole book!!!! Yes they are busy but gee don't they WANT to look at new things?

If a drug rep comes in I noticed that he barges right in, before all the sickies in the waiting room. Then when my turn comes, doc says, "here try this" and hands me what the rep just left him.

I wish I had some Nal to send you but I'm waiting too for some from India. Anyone out there who could FedX these folks some? I've done this before, as have some of the old timers here and it's a true joy to be able to get someone who really needs it to take it right away and see results!!!!!

After the second trip to the hospital in two months because hub can't stop his binge, we have the naltrexone and he has started the Sinclair Method. I am not sure how wise this is, finally sober after a horrible binge, but he has tried abstinence and eventually slips and BAM the binge is off. Each binge has started faster. TIme to try something different. I pray he will be able to go to work sober on Monday...he is consuming slowly right now. 6 units since 3:00 and now it is 8:30. The breathalyzer says .05.

We will monitor this together and begin a journal here.

Do you have a progress thread that I can follow on this board? I'm very interested in your story.
