What a great thread. Been thinking more and more about how the environment has an impact on my drinking

1) Only about 5% of my drinking has ever taken place at home. This may be because my husband never drinks at home and doesn't approve if I do it alone. This however has led to lots of alternative inappropriate drinking such as drinking on my own after work in bars and pretending I've been out with workmates. However now I'm on TSM I'm glad I don't have a history of drinking at home as I think it must be harder trigger to crack.
2) Way, way above average in social outings. Since the first time I drink I have always struggled to control it in social outings. Most outings result in black/ grey out.
3) About 50% . Used to be higher but they grew up and cut down their drinking while I continued to escalate!
4) Yes maybe.

1. 90%, but at my worst pre-NAL that would be more like 75% (I was sneaking in more drinks on the outside then)

2. Above average in terms of alcohol consumption, in my typical social outings?

3. Peers: My #1 peer is my husband and he drinks above average as I did/do as well. We have a mixed group of other peers that mostly are average, but can be above average when they party at our house.

4. Based on my answer to #3 I think this is yes?

Maybe another interesting question would be:

5. If you were to take alternative social opportunities - e.g. hang out with different neighbours, work colleagues, family members etc, would there be a significant difference in the amount YOU drink compared to (3) above?

I now drink less around my outside family members, for example. Most of the people we hang out with drink, so it's a big part of the current social setting. If we had friends that didn't drink as miuch, I'd like to think it would help me even more to reduce.

I used to drink socially, but never liked it, as I would almost inevitably drink too much and embarass myself. I never liked bars or big parties, since I hate crowds, noise, and staying up late. Also, since coming out as a "problem drinker in recovery" a few years ago, I haven't been able to just have one when at dinners or more low-key functions, driving my drinking into the closet. The great thing about TSM is that I don't have to hide it anymore. Having said this:

1. 100 % of my drinking was at home, or in my car alone, at least for the past few years.
2. As someone who is generally awkward in social settings, I found that drinking calmed my social anxiety. Thus, I would often drink before going into a setting where I would have to interact with people (including AA meetings!), and if it was an event where alcohol was present, I would continue to have way too much. I don't think that I did so out of "peer pressure," but rather, to relieve the stress of being with groups of people.
3. As a lone drinker, I never developed drinking buddies--which makes it difficult to "get away from old playgrounds and playmates," as they told me "in the program." My playmate is me and my playground is my own house.
4. In my case, not very applicable.

I was thinking about this the other day, and thought it might be interesting and useful to compare our environments. After all some of us may be in environments where drinking is not the norm while others may be where excessive drinking is the norm.
I thought the best way to do this would be to ask a few questions. I'll provide my own answers in another post

1. What percentage of your drinking is in your own home?
2. Before TSM, were you average, below average, or above average in terms of alcohol consumption, in your typical social outings?
3. On an average social outing, how much do the peers you associate with drink - compared to a safe weekly level?
4. If you were to take alternative social opportunities - e.g. hang out with different neighbours, work colleagues, family members etc, would there be a significant difference in the amount THEY drink compared to (3) above?

Surveys are fun. :P

1. 90 something %
2. Probably somewhere around average, or slightly above. I would never 'sneak in' extra drinks, and I don't spend time with people who want to prove how much of a badass they are by out-drinking everyone else.
3. A safe weekly level is considered to be 21 (UK) units. That's really just a number picked out of the sky, but if I were to go along with it I would say most peers would be a couple of drinks below the safe weekly during a single drinking session.
4. Perhaps. I don't really know much about the drinking habits of people I don't hang out with.

1. What percentage of your drinking is in your own home?
95%, done alone (I'm a hider)

2. Before TSM, were you average, below average, or above average in terms of alcohol consumption, in your typical social outings?
Depending on the social group average to above average. I was very careful to not drink too much with most people so as not to stand out, but I do have a couple of friends who are heavy drinkers

3. On an average social outing, how much do the peers you associate with drink - compared to a safe weekly level?
see #2-also people in academia can drink A LOT!

4. If you were to take alternative social opportunities - e.g. hang out with different neighbours, work colleagues, family members etc, would there be a significant difference in the amount THEY drink compared to (3) above?
probably, although I notice when I hang out with my two older sisters they drink a lot more than they usually would, probably because of me (they rarely drink, so I think when they're with me it's festive for them)
