My uncle has been a heavy drinker for years, which I didn't always know about (and I was damn pissed off when I found out, as I would no longer be able to tell doctors I had no family history of alcoholism). He's tried off and on to get sober, through rehab and various support groups (both AA and other - he's lucky to be in the SF Bay Area where there are a lot of alternatives to AA), but has been back to drinking again for several months.
About two months ago my mom forwarded him an email of mine about how I'd started TSM, including a PDF of one of the articles showing scientific support for Naltrexone + drinking. In his drunken state, he skimmed over the email thinking that Nal was another one of those drugs meant to support abstinence.
Well, my mom called him recently to wish him happy birthday, and she asked if he'd read that email. Once he realized that Nal is a no-detox, no-abstinence possibility for curing alcoholism, he was excited and said he'd ask his doctor to prescribe it for him. I wish him good luck (although it'll be weird if we both end up on this board!). Actually if we both end up on this board we can have a race to see who's cured first!
