Ok, help me out here. I am new to the method and want to know how to measure units. I have ordered the book from Amazon, but have not received it yet. My poision of choice is strong beer, about 8.9 percent alcohol. Please how do I calculate the units? I have decided not to drink any other alcohol than this for consistency during this treatment. I am thinking it is probably double that of an average beer.

Hi there,

this is the euro/UK formula:

Volume X Percent/1000 = Units of Alcohol

hope this helps!

If you search "measuring units" on this board you will find much discussion about this and various ways to measure. The purpose of keeping track of units is to measure your own progress, so the method you use is not nearly so important as being consistent. Eskapa has a chart of units in the book you may find useful.

Sticking to a particular beer might be okay as long as you do not find other types of drinks to be a trigger that needs to be extinguished, as is the case for many of us. This is part of the direction that we drink as we normally do.

The main thing is to take naltrexone one hour before you drink.

Let us know how it's going.

I've been looking at Eskapa's chart of units and I can't make head or tail of it. These appear to be UK units, correct? One drink in U.S. = 1.7 drinks in UK units (approximately)?

I think I am just going to stick with U.S. units, in which (at least I thought this was the case) one unit = .6 ounce of pure alcohol (although Eskapa's table shows it as .5 ounce of alcohol). I guess the important thing is to be consistent.

Luna,

As Lena points out, it isn't important how you calculate the units, but that you do it the same every time. For example: 1 bottle of wine = 6 units, 1 beer = 2 units, etc. If you do a search on google, you'll find tables that list all sorts of different drinks with units attached to them. Pick one of these tables and print it out.

Most of us drink (drank) the same thing most of the time, so once you put units to this, it's pretty easy to track. For me, it was red wine. I never did try to track my progress right to the single unit. It was more along the lines of: I drank 2 bottles of wine last night, so 12 units; 1 1/2 bottles of wine, so 9 units. Make sense?
