Yes, I'm an engineer and I need your help. Go ahead and chuckle -- laughter is healthy!!

At any rate, last night I tried a new drink called Alize. Can you help me determine how many units are in a 750 ml bottle? Alize is 16% alcohol.

If you can help me determine how many units are in a bottle, I can take it from there.

Thanks so much!!

I would guess 5 as I think it would be about 4 for a normal bottle of wine and that is a bit strionger.

I think you just need within a drink numbers...I understand being an engineer teh need for precise figures....

Cool. Jim

Agreed; 6¾ units, although I used a different method.

What is it about engineers and lawyers that they seem to be drawn to TSM or, at the very least, this website? I'm an engineer as well.

Bob

The important thing is about units is comparing apples to apples. In other words, be internally consistent about how you count your own units. After all, you are measuring your own progress rather than comparing yourself to others. We literally are all over the board in how we count our own units! Alize is about the same alcohol content as a fortified wine. Compare the units in Eskapa's book for this, using the method you usually use to estimate units.

I suggest using UK units, as they are very easy to calculate. Calculate how many litres you drink/drank. Multiply that by the % alcohol and that is the answer!

e.g. 750ml is 3/4 of a litre. 16% alcohol. Answer is 3/4 of 16 units = 12 UK units per bottle

Thanks, everyone! Although the exact number isn't important (since what I'm tracking is the trend), having a consistent way of calculating will help me track in situations where I drink different things, in different shapes of glasses, etc.

For instance, my friend owns a winery, and he is a little smitten with me, so he pours very generously.

If I may digress: This friend is the only person who does not wholeheartedly applaud my desire to reduce my drinking. He's afraid I may end up abstaining. The reason that concerns him is that he only drinks with me. Seems that everywhere I look, I find people who have funny feelings about alcohol. :?:
