I am glad to see the NIAAA and the media may be starting to get past the 12-step dogma and therapy aspect of alcohol addiction. Pharma companies will have to develop a new drug or alter an existing drug so they can makes some bucks from this pervasive problem. Perhaps if they approve a new Naltrexone related drug or a Naltrexone metabolite, they could include the correct instructions for taking it (a la TSM), then they could make money AND more people would be cured.
It's unfortunate that the article was missing alternate methods with existing meds and alternate medications, some of them glaring omissions (Antabuse).
It is also unfortunate that the first user comment you can read is "AA worked for me and I've been sober for x years and couldn't be happier" or some well-meaning drivel like that. Leaving out, of course, those depressing and endless meetings that chew up your time forever. And that commenter is just one drink from being an alcoholic again. In TSM, I'm one drink away from my next TSM treatment which will be sometime next week or so. I'm looking forward to further extinction, whereas that poster is probably dreading that possible next drink.
I noticed a lot of other comments about LSD and other hallucinogens that have some promise for treating alcoholism. Didn't Bill W of AA fame take LSD as a medical treatment for alcohol addiction. At least AA's founder was looking to progress beyond 12 stepping, even if his organization remained where it was in the 1930's.
I also saw one post about Dr. Ameisen's Baclofen cure, but nothing about TSM.
