I'm 4 days in and VERY pleased with 3 nights of drinking w/ Naltrexone. I didn't expect such immediate results. A few questions:

1) Is it possible to accidentally "extinguish" GOOD things? Like, if you do things you like (sex, video games, whatever) while drinking on Naltrexone, might you lose interest in them??

2) It's probably too soon to tell, but I believe I'm experiencing a decreased sex drive. Anyone else?

3) I'm very pleased with 25mg so far. Unless I get out of control at some point in the future, I'm going to stay on 25mg per drinking session. Thoughts?

4) I paid $50 copay for 30x 50mg pills. I have average insurance that I purchase myself. That seemed a bit high. Anyone?

Thanks-- I'm glad I joined this forum.

I was really concerned about this topic as well and am happy to report that all GOOD things are still GOOD things!! I have read other posts reporting this as well. This was such a concern of mine after reading the book that I almost didn't commence TSM. I'm hoping that they revise that section when they update the book!

2) It's probably too soon to tell, but I believe I'm experiencing a decreased sex drive. Anyone else?

A few people have mentioned that they have a decrease in pleasurable things but I think more report no difference whatsoever. Do you think maybe you are just preoccupied with working on your cure? or perhaps it is the power of suggestion from thinking that you may experience this? Hopefully this too will pass as you adjust to your meds!

3) I'm very pleased with 25mg so far. Unless I get out of control at some point in the future, I'm going to stay on 25mg per drinking session. Thoughts?

The recommended dosage is 50mg. but, like all meds, this could be affected by weight and sensitivity to meds. I don't know how you can tell if 25 mg. is working for you since extinction takes months, usually. Personally, if the research is based on Nal working to cure at 50 mg. I'd stick with that. You wouldn't want to find out 9 months down the road that if you had been taking the recommended dose, you would be cured but at half dose you're not. I'll let someone else chip in with their thoughts on this.

4) I paid $50 copay for 30x 50mg pills. I have average insurance that I purchase myself. That seemed a bit high. Anyone?

I don't have insurance and ordered online. Mine were 16.63 per 10 so $49.89 for 30.

Don't forget that immediate results are common. It's not something that stays and your drinking will surely go back to normal or even higher than normal levels before you see true reduction over weeks and weeks of taking Nal. Hopefully you have the book by Dr. Eskapa and have read that.

Happy you are here. Welcome and keep posting.

I knew there was something about the 25 mg. Found it:

Seven weeks in and I still only take 25 mg of naltrexone when I know that my window of drinking will be between say, 7 PM and 10 PM. If you take 25 mg of naltrexone, wait an hour, drink and then finish the drinking within a few hours after that, you are fully covered. 50 mg covers you for 24 hours; 12 mg certainly will cover you for a few hours -- probably as many as 12. I personally don't see any risk of taking 25 mg if you know for certain you'll be done drinking within a few hours after taking the nal. Dr. Eskapa verified as much on this site with others who really wanted to stick at 25 mg in order to mitigate side effects.

When TSM works for you, you may eventually be able to have AF days pretty much whenever you choose. We know that the Golden Rule is what it is because it will be much easier to become readdicted to AL if we drink without Nal in the future. Therefore, I conclude that anything *else* that *might* have been extinguished as collateral damage (however unlikely that might be) would be equally as easy to become readdicted to.

Think how much fun *that* could be
