Has anyone noticed any weight gain while taking Naltrexone?

I have probably gained 10 pounds in the two weeks I've been on Naltrexone. This is surprising, because I have consumed literally HALF the calories I used to consume in beer since starting w/ Naltrexone. But I seem to be gaining weight.

I haven't been pigging out or anything really out of the ordinary. I did notice a very slight craving increase for sweets. I am normally a pretty much zero-sweets kind of guy. Dessert just isn't my thing. But since taking Naltrexone, I've noticed a couple of thoughts like, "Hmmmm, some M&M's sure would be nice right now." But I haven't really indulged those thoughts much.

Anyone else notice anything to do with weight increase, appetite, or a shift in cravings?

Pisces7378,

I have actually noticed a decrease in my appetite that has helped me shed some pounds although not too many for sure.

I don't recall anyone else commenting on adding weight since I have been on board (April, 09), but I could be mistaken. I have always loved sweets so I can't comment on a shift there.

I hope this won't be a problem for you.

Happy Holidays, everyone,

Bamabeachin'

No weight gain for me either and I don't recall anyone else complaining of weight gain on naltrexone. I've been here since 5/09.

The weight gain is probably from sweets. When I quit drinking for the 5 years, I was an ice cream and cookie aholic. Candy etc. Its the body trying to replace all of the sugar that booze gave....Are you drinking less and could that be it? more sweets?

I try and work out daily so as to burn at least 600-800 calories. I am vacillating between 180-183 pounds. I want to get to 170 and then Lo0p out. Get some muscle and wind up around 173ish. I do eat more sweets as I drink less for sure...

Take care and happy holidays

Yeah, you are probably right. I am unemployed at the moment, and have pretty much never in my life been this sedentary. Couple that with it being the holidays, and the fact that I just stopped smoking less than a month ago.

Sometimes it is hard to face facts, but what do you guys think is more likely my problem...?

Option #1: Depression, coupled with being a new found couch potato, just stopped smoking, changing my drinking habits, and it's the holidays....

Option #2: ...or an extremely rare side effect from a drug?

I'm not a betting man, but my money's on option #1.

Home, quit smoking (always a weight gainer because of the oral fixation), couch potato, no booze or less booze add sweets,........

I am a betting man and I've got $1,000,000 on #1.

You hang in there. I've heard of people tackling multiple addictions at once with success,..so all the power to you.

I quit smoking 4 years ago amidst my relapse oddly, but I promised myself not to start again. I wanted that nasty habit gone for sure. Odd, AA almost endorses smoking "Nobody ever got driving while smoking", yeah but emphysema and lung cancer are pretty nasty diseases.

It is definitely not a side effect of Naltrexone....better appetite might be though.

Try and add a workout. My gym is relatively cheap. I try and go every day. If you start up it only takes a few weeks to make it a habit that you will look forward to AND....you can at least keep your weight in check if you're screwing up with your diet.

Best to you my friend, Jim Clark

I don't want to step on anyone's toes, because I know that some people absolutely adore AA. I however, think that AA is an outdated, religion-based relic that should fall to the side like Freud and Jung; awesome ideas for their time, but very ineffective compared to modern wisdom and techniques.

There are so many slogans, catch phrases, cliches, rhyming mantras... every person I've ever known in AA, ends up just sounding like one of those dolls with a string in their back, regurgitating scripted answers to every question one poses. Now granted, considering the fact that AA has been around since like 1935, it is going to pick up a lot of baggage, interpretations, and personal angles. But in general a 10-12% success rate... joining a good quilting bee might very well have the same 10-12% success rate.

But, I've never been to an AA meeting, so I hate to judge so harshly. I truly admire anyone with the courage to face their demons head on, with nothing but will power between them and failure. That is one meaty struggle, if you ask me. Standing ovat' to anyone who found success through AA.

I haven't noticed any weight gain with nal. To the contrary, I have lost about 10 lbs (though I don't ascribe that to the medication). I do notice when I cut down on alcohol, I crave sweets more....and I'm not real big on sweets to begin with. As far as AA, I'm sure quite a few people on this board have gone that route and wouldn't be here if it was successful. I went to a few meetings but it wasn't for me.
