I have ordered my pills but they haven't arrived yet. My husband is very, very skeptical and has given up on me. I would like to go to marriage counseling but I'm afraid any counselor will not be familiar with TSM and will insist that I quit drinking before they will help. How can I find a counselor who is familiar with TSM and will be sympathetic? TIA

As far as the counselor I have no idea but definitly see where you are coming from on that one. Do you have the book " The Cure for Alcoholism"? Maybye you could have your husband read it if he hasnt already. It's a great book on the sinclair method.

Good luck.

Thanks, Crown86. Yes, I've read the book and have given it to my husband. He's on page 50. So far, all he can say is "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." He's very depressed that I can't just quit. We've been married 43 years.

Have your husband read the progress threads of peopled cured on this board, as well as others who are progressing very well under the method. I was a skeptic also -- not any more. Take your first dose on a full stomach and only take 25 the first time to minimize side effects, like nausea. Also, the time frames in the book are a bit off from our experience here. A more realistic time frame for major improvement is closer to six months.

The chances of finding a counselor who has heard of TSM are extremely remote. You may have to educate him/her yourself with the book as well as other articles on TSM. Look at the "Naltrexone in the News" thread for some persuasive resources.

Hi Carolina & welcome!
I sympathize w/ not having an understanding spouse. Altho I am divorced, I doubt seriously my ex would have embraced this either. I just want to offer you encouragement and to summon every ounce of strength you have and INSIST this is worth a try.

It wil be hard to find a DR who is behind it unless there is an addiction specialist in your city, depending on the size. Not knowing your story or you past, it sounds like you have had some "episodes" that are probably what your spouse is holding against you. Fair enough, but, do continue to push the hopefulness of this method and yes, read this board, get him on here and just TRY it. Medication for alcohol addiction?? Why not?! There's a medication for everything else. And it DOES work for most...

Wishing you success and support from your hubby! Keep reading and posting. We are all new to this too, and this board is a lifeline for many of us. Hope the pills arrive soon & all goes well!

GO HORNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are some very valuable posts for a spouse or SO. A lucky few here have support from a spouse. I recall some very touching posts by Providence, whose husband was skeptical in the beginning. Also Krazy1 and happy4once. You might want to print something out if it rings true.

Carolina girl

I had the same reaction as your husband...LOL and I wanted to quit drinking. You really can't blame him living with an alcoholic is hell on earth. After my fiance left because of my drinking it was hard to even live in my own skin. Other reasons you can't blame him is the traditional view of abstienence is the only way dominates the mindset of treating alcoholism. Also, if he has lived thru hell with you drinking and is not an alcoholic, he will never understand you not quitting. Meaning if alcohol is causeing all this hell and and killing your marriage then simply quit the booze. I know it's not so simple because you get a very dark place where alcohol does the choosing for you.

On a brighter note, I hope he gives it a whirl with you. If you get the results a lot of folks get with Naltrexone I would venture to say alcohol will not be a disruptive force in your marriage any longer.

I wish you the best

Hoping the best for you Carolinagirl. I'm sure you and your husband has had a lot of conversions about your drinking but what I can't figure out is why someone would think that one would keep drinking to ruin their health, relationships and prospects for the future if it was just a matter of deciding to stop. AA has a success rate of 5% and TSM has a success rate of 80% it's not hard to decide which one to choose.

good luck

My wife gave up on me after I had tried 20+ times to quit. I tried AA, Rational Recovery, therapy, Campral, Aversion Therapy (gruesome), all multiple times, all failures. I was a lost cause.

Then I tried this too-good-to-be-true method, but it makes sense scientifically. So I tried it, but I never believed deep in my heart that it would work and neither did my wife. But it did work and I didn't even try to make it work other than following directions. My psychiatrist was interested in the treatment and especially my meticulous documentation. With several months of low to moderate drinking now, my psychiatrist, my friends, my coworkers, and most importantly my wife are all believers in TSM.

Try it. As far as I know, there's no downside.
And check out my thread, especially the last post, and look at the graph of my drinking over the last 43 weeks and decide for yourself.

PS I'm a real person. I was an alchy. I am not any more. Thanks be to Dr. Sinclair!
