Hi folks, still looking for that PHD that can prescribe and I'm about to go straight to River Pharmacy if I don't connect soon. However, my question is related to my previously mentioned 80-yr old father.

He continues to drink like a sailor and although his mind is still sharp, his physical condition is deteriorating. When sober, he has a difficult time walking due to age and a couple of leg and foot injuries. He drinks himself (after 5) into a drunken state on a good day and a drunken stupor on others; however, when he gets to this state, he has begun to stumble, fall down, etc., etc. My stepmother is about to leave him after 25 years of marriage (she is a lively 72-yr old, lots of miles left on this lady). She is a petite woman and can't handle his big ass hitting the floor, if you can imagine. My brothers and I all live hours away.

I have yet to talk to him about TSM, but he would be open to it. Do you think 80 years old is too old to start this treatment? Do we have on this board any users in this same age range? Please chime in, I need to help my dad as well as myself.

As far as the age thing I would definitly get that one from an MD. I wish you the best in helping your DAD, That must seriously be a terrible position to be in being hours away an having elderly parent, add booze and man I feel for you the nightmare it must be.

Me personally I went right to River. I looked briefly for an MD and was like well it's probably best it's not on my record and well if I am willing to dump a substance down my throat in greeat quantities which will abosulutely proven to give me medical issues without an MD..LOL like they would say drink it..so why not try a pill that might help me. After I read some posts here about folks with insurance issues I am glad naltrexone is not on my file.

Crown, thanks for the input. Without looking around on the board, how's it going for you, given you went straight to the pill? And if you don't mind me asking, how old are you, are you in pretty good health, so forth and so on?

Hey cap - Welcome here and good luck with your dad. I have absolutely no words of advice. Sounds dicey but surely if he is a candidate for this med & willing to try...who knows. Maybe tell your stepmother and she can pass it on to him?

An interesting thread for me too, as my 66 year-old (disabled) father is also an alcoholic. He would never be able to go through a detox/rehab unless it was a comfortable private one.

He is interested in TSM, and is waiting to see how I fare with it (not too well at present!! - hopefully just part of the rollercoaster.

He is mainly a functioning alcoholic, and seems happy enough to plod along. And, his disablity means it would be impossible to get him to see a TSM doctor (too far away). He is on such a cocktail of medications already (for heart, lung problems, and depression) there is simply no chance that any study in the world would have been conducted for all the various interactions, and I would be very hesitant to put him on Nal without medical supervision.
