It's been a long time since anyone has heard from N101CS and I'm beginning to be worried. The last time we had anything from him he was very distraught about what was happening in his personal life and maybe we came on too strong with our opinions in the way he should go that scared him away. Lena hopefully you know more than us about what is going on with N101CS please tell him that we're concerned and that the banner is just an after thought, we care about him!

Corkit, did you get my pm? I don't think anyone has anything to worry about. N101CS was going to try to get the new banner up this past weekend but obviously didn't have time. Really, it's all good. I think people would be amazed at how on autopilot this board really is. The moderators/admin communicate very little; there is no separate, private area where we chat. We just communicate when there is a need (such as when I learned the site was down, I texted N101CS). N101CS is giving some thought to the dreaded "run-over-by-a-truck" scenario and will make provisions that the board survives him.

The trains may not always run on time, but I prefer the sort of autopilot/anarchic approach to a more structured governance.

So I hope it's all good with everyone.

As uncomfortable as that thought is, I feel encouraged that this life-line of a site will continue indefinitely into the future.

Lena,

On this particular point, I assume that this site is being monitored by a service such as WatchMouse or eXternalTest. These services let you know when a site has gone down, often by sending an SMS (text) message to the webmaster, for example. Dependent on how frequently a site is monitored, these services are often free for hourly checking. Sometimes, it's necessary to put a small button on a website saying something like 'Monitored by WatchMouse' but they are not obtrusive. I use both WatchMouse and eXternalTest but there are many more such services available.

Lena,

A further three weeks have passed since you wrote the above and the banner still remains unchanged. Despite your reassurances that "I don't think anyone has anything to worry about" and "I think people would be amazed at how on autopilot this board really is", I think it's self-evident that the board relies too heavily on the autopilot approach. N101CS seems reluctant to share the day-to-day site admin tasks with anyone else - what is the reason for this?

I should also point out that it is no less than seven weeks since corkit raised the original question "Should the banner be changed"!

Please also see my post immediately above.

I agree. Auto-pilot it obviously is (although 'admin' and not N101CS was seen to post just a few days ago).

I'm extremely concerned, both about the banner, and about the auto-pilot. The former is completely wrong and misleading, and it has been weeks and weeks now, and auto-pilot is not infallible.

As I wrote 'admin' has posted in the last few days, so why the Dickens hasn't something been done about the banner?

I believe Lena and/or Nick should be given admin rights so that simple important coding issues can be rectified asap.
