Hi guys
Not sure if i should be here...
Have been drinking far to much for far too long.
2 bottles of wine every other night..?
Lost friends, family, jobs....
Just don't know where to turn.
Haven't tried detox or AA but counselling isn't working. Hoping Nal will stop me having that embarrassing drinking pattern of not being able to stop at one. Ending up with blackouts and no recolection of what i have done...

Would appreciate your advice..
Love MP XX

Hi moneypenny, glad you found us and welcome. How did you find us? Have you heard of the book by Dr. Eskapa "The Cure for Alcoholism"? A very important book to read to know what this board is all about. All of us here are coming from different histories of AL but you are now among friends. The med is Naltrexone which we take one hour before drinking any AL but that is the short of the story, read the posts here the present and the past to know more about the method and please get the book. We are all here for you to answer any questions and keep posting.

Thanks Corkit

I have ordered the book which shoukd arrive tomorrow and the Naltrexone I have ordered 90 tablets from allday chemist in India. Hopefully thay will be here in a couple of weeks. I understand from the posts that you only take the Nal on the days you drink and not every day ? Approx an hour beforehand ? Do you know if you can take it whilst taking Mirtazapine..? The Gp had prescribed these for depression. However I think the depression is due to the alcohol. I think I need to learn to moderate the alcohol first.

I'm not a doctor so I can't help you there but you're right about depression and AL. My husband is also on Nal and he takes a med called Seroquel which is for depression and our doctor didn't seem to be concerned about the two. My HB only takes Seroquel at night to help him sleep. I'm assuming your doc is not prescribing the Nal, hopefully someone else on this board is familiar with what you're taking and can answer this question for you. It also helps to dig on the internet as well.

Good luck, keep posting and know we're here for you

Welcome MP --

No one on this site can responsibly answer questions that only an MD could reliably answer, namely, any questions about drug interactions. That being said, the answer to your question could be answered in both the book and the naltrexone insert, which both clearly outline when naltrexone should not be taken/prescribed.

You will find that naltrexone will probably help you a lot with your issues. I was blacking out conversations before TSM and never do now; I was losing control of my drinking and acting like a fool and never do now. Make sure you only take 25 mg the first couple of times as the book completely ignores the side effects that are fairly harsh for the vast majority on this board. These include feeling "spacey", severe nausea and sleep disturbance after the first few times we take the naltrexone. The good news is that these side effects go away almost immediately -- typically after the first few doses. Or you could be in the lucky small minority who do not have side effects. As soon as you do not, move up to 50 mg. Also, take the pill on a full stomach to reduce the side effects. Lastly, the time frames for the "cure" in the book are wildly off the mark: do not expect to be "cured" in three to four months. Rather, expect continued reduction in your cravings and consumption over a longer time period than advertised in the book. But the TSM benefits are very real and TSM has tremendously helped the vast majority of us get a handle on our drinking habit.

My best to you.

Nick

Hey MP,

I will be updating my progress later today but wanted to agree with all comments plus know that in a few months, your hangovers on Nal will resemble those you had as a beginning drinker.

I had a hangover yesterday (I've had a few since starting TSM), that was horrific.

I won't hijack your thread but will be posting my update later today,...Off to the shrink!

BEst, JIm

Hi Moneypenny,
Welcome.
I am new here and new to Nal and would also say read the book and basically you are correct about taking Nal only on drinking days and as close to an hour beforehand as you can take it.
The book was actually an easy read and very informative. It really helped boost my morale when I read about such a huge success rate! Even if it does not work for me (cringe) , I still have had enough hope to further investigate and keep trying until I find someway to manage my alcoholism.
Best wishes,
Brit

Hello Money,
I was prescribed mirtazapine by my Dr. when I was having trouble sleeping during one of the abstinence phases. It is a fairly powerful anti-depressant. Anyway there probably isn't any interaction as nal has few, opiates would be the main one. That is not a synergistic but a cancelling effect. When I started nal I kinda thought the welbutrin I am taking lost some efficacy. It may have. I believe this might be something you might feel.
That mirtazapine while drinking kinda knocked my dick in the dirt. I would be careful with that part of the program too.
Anyway, welcome aboard. Feel free to share your experiences.

Hi rapper et al

Took my first dose of mirtazapine (without drinking) woke up feeling really groggy 12hrs plus later, horrible. The'book' arrived today and have read it in about 3hrs. Feeling really positive about taking Nal when drinking.

I know being a single girl that I drink alot alone at home, have become a crazy cat lover. Mr Jinks is my british blue and has been my life line since I split with my ex 2 yrs ago. Hoping that there is a rosy future for us all X
