I am very worried about the sinclair method. I did try it before for 3 months and noticed no change in drinking patterns, however, I do feel that it changed how i reacted after drinking and that i didnt feel as ill on it, so I have decided perhaps to give it another try.

However, I have some very real concerns, mainly regarding the way naltrexone can react with your body and other things in your life.

1 My main concern is the opoid blocking factors. I am absolutely terrified of having a heart attack, or serious accident and am unsure as to the effect that would have if they gave me opoids (unwittingly). I do carry something in my handback inside my driving licence, but unless i am mistaken in an emergency it is very unlikely that they would look for this. What affect would the giving of opoids have in this instance.

2 Also, I am worried because I get my nal on line, i will not go to a doctor here in the uk, i am a totally functioning drinker, and do not want to be labelled as an alcoholic. Absolutely cannot afford to have that on my medical record, it would completely stop me professionally.

3 Worried about other recreational activities such as sex and exercise. When I did sinclair last time i was very depressed and neither of these activities really appealed to me, but i currently have a very healthy sex life and i need to lose about 3 stone and go to the gym 3 times a week. Both activities I am not really happy about curtailing or giving up.

I find that the book doesnt really fully adress these issues, I would be very grateful if anyone was prepared to offer up some advice here, hopefully to put my mind at rest, so that I can give it another go and hopefully succeed. However, I also want to hear from anyone who has not had good affects re the above.

Hi soberwithin,

I'm also worried about the medical emergency situation. I carry a list of my meds in my wallet, but am worried that might not be enough. I'm looking to get a medical bracelet that is discrete and attractive enough but will do the job if the worst should ever happen.

As for the doctor, I'm in the UK near London and may know of a private doctor who practices TSM and who might not necessarily inform your regular GP or the NHS in general. If interested (you could always contact them - anonymously at first - and say that you absolutely need confidentiality, and ask if they will see you on that basis), please PM me.

Otherwise, what are your concerns about getting Nal online?

All the best to you on your journey :)

Hi soberwithin,

Do you mind my asking - why do you not want to go to see a doctor?

Also, with reference to having an accident, you may be interested in the following:

My best wishes.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies so far. It would seem that quite a few people are worried about the medical emergency thing, and i have just read somewhere on here tonight that even after coming of nal, that even a small does of morphine could be life threatening. I am now really scared. It doesnt mention this in the book. can someone please give clarification about something that is so worrying.

I wont got a doctor in the UK, becauxe the profession I am in always asks about drug/alcohol dependance on its screening forms for recruitment and i cant afford to have something like this on my record, it would basically be professional suicide.

Thanks for your help everyone, anyone got any more advice?

I read the post I think you're referring to, and if I understand it correctly it doesn't offer any evidence of that beyond a strongly stated opinion (seemingly presented as fact, whether intentionally or not), and this is the very first I have heard of such a concern since visiting here almost daily since early this year. Hopefully we will get some clarification on that here, but if not I really suggest you seek further clarification on that perhaps on a more specific thread, or by a question to Dr Eskapa.

All the best, hope all these concerns do not put you off too much :)

In the UK Nalorex the branded naltrexone 50 mg comes along with a card for the patient to fill out and carry at all times informing potential medical professionals that the patient is on naltrexone. This is a precaution in case the patient requires an opiate such as morphine (after an accident or coronary for instance) ... if on naltrexone the opiate (morphine) will not be effective and there are other measures that can be used for anaesthesia or pain control before the naltrexone is stopped.

This is a quote from Dr Eskapa

I will address the sex & exercise. I am a runner and I've noticed no difference in my running with or without Nal. Sex, well I've always had a compromised sex issue too complicated to discuss here but no difference there either-hint, self-esteem/confidence/depression related. Another not discussed, appetite for food. I've noticed that my appetite is reduced & sometimes certain food I used to gorge on all of a sudden fill me up and to eat more is disgusting. I am also on generic Wellbutrin & that+Nal=Contrave a drug combo not on the market yet for diet therapy.

I run with Road I.D., it has an account number & phone number that allows anyone who 'finds me' to get my basic medical information on telephone or internet with special codes on the I.D. I should probably carry that with me all the time.

Thanks soul, great advice and you're quite right - I just found the card in the box - I hadn't seen it before!

It's very useful to carry but I still worry in the case that the medics didn't check your wallet, so I'll be looking at a bracelet too.

Could someone clarify for me what the problem is with Nal in a medical emergency situation? This is the first I've heard of this and now I'm worried and not a little scared.
Thanks anyone.

HI Lucy,

Opiates won't be effective for pain and they have to use something else...I think there's more links discussing around the board, Jim
