Hi all -- I hope we all (including me)learn from my experience . . .

At the time of my last post (early March) I was traveling and dealing w/ what I thought was a bout of food poisoning. We always blame it on the sushi, right? I managed to get home and got to my m.d. The next day I was in the hospital. I had a perforated colon which resulted in peritonitis. I had surgery and will need more in six weeks. Meanwhile I am on pain meds and will be probably be thru the next surgery, so naltrexone is out of the question for now. I have very little desire to drink right now -- a couple of glasses of wine at most. I'm not sure what to do, other than forced abstinence/modding for a few weeks until I am over this. Hopefully I was off the nal long enough for the additional opioid receptors to start going away.

I will be fine but it was a scare.

Take care all, lena

BEST TO YOU

Hi Lena, So nice to hear from you, we were missing you so thanks so much for reporting in!

So did you have any problem with your procedure or pain as the result of having been ingesting the naltrexone? I am not sure if this med disallows pain meds to perform their function. I did go to the dentist the other day and had a shot of Novocain and I did not suffer any lack of comfort. I hope you do well in your continued recovery. Stick around, you are such a benefit to us all. AS I READ AGAIN YOUR POST, how long were you off the nal prior to your procedure?

So glad you are back, Lena, it's not the same without you!

Sorry to hear about the peritonitis, how awful. I hope the recovery goes quickly and you can join back in the Nal fun soon...and I hope you can post while you recover: lots of new starters this month that could benefit from your wise posts.

Lena,

It is good to hear from you.

I'm sorry for your bad luck with your health. I also hope you recover quickly.

Thank you for updating us. We've all been thinking about you and asking each other if anyone knew how you were doing.

Looking forward to your return to our group!

I didn't go into detail about this, beccause I don't even like to think about it. But I was catching up on posts and noticed someone is taking pain meds. So, here is part of my pm to Waiting to Exhale:

A day or two after I got home from the hospital, I laid off the pain pills for a day (percocet) so I could take a nal and have a glass of wine. It was an awful experience. Awful. I would never take nal again within a few days of any synthetic opioid such as vicodin or percocet. Please, err on the side of caution.

Please, people, nal and pain meds do not mix!!! Never never never. It was foolish of me and I don't want anyone else to make the same mistake. I was going to ask Dr. Eskapa about this but with someone here taking pain meds it could not wait.

Lena, welcome back. I am so glad you survived your ordeal. I understand how serious peritonitis can be. My sister had it as a result of a ruptured appendix, and very nearly died.

Did the nal prevent the pain meds from doing their job? Or was there another type of reaction?

I don't think asking is necessary for I think it is already addressed in his book. Pages 88 and 204 and several others address this clearly. My god lady, you could have killed yourself! Pain meds and Nal do not mix!

Average AF days 6/wk

I now count days on Nal, rather than drinking days.

Actually, I did read those and they refer to addiction situations. I certainly was not taking anything long enough to be addicted. I think it's important for us to learn just how long we need to clear any use of opioid-type pain meds before we resume the nal. We also need to know how long the nal should clear before we can safely take this type of med.

My concern is for the pain meds and alcohol. I did that once (pain meds and muscle relaxers + wine), and it was nearly disasterous. Careful, careful, careful. . .
