I loved the taste of lager, or thought I did, until TSM. Without the endorphin rush tricking me into thinking it tastes like liquid gold, it tastes pretty rough these days. Yet still I drink it; so many aspects of beer drinking in the evenings need to be extinguished for me.

I used to love fine Whisky too. I'm indifferent to the taste now, but it's still a means to an end when my panic gets really bad. Unfortunately that usually sends me into that troublesome spiral many of us know so well.

Upon further review, alcohol is just alcohol for me, but that's just me. I never liked the taste of any of it, just the effect. I'd have drunk used car oil if it didn't kill me and got me the same buzz. I can definitely see that if one has an affinity for a certain type of booze that this has implications for extinction. And the biggest implication is to take the drink you like best and drink on it with naltrexone, over and over again, until your craving is extinguished.

I LIKE that approach. Lemme at my Pinot Grigiot--an hour after my Nal, of course. ;)

Interesting topic! Not sure how you might measure the data but here goes.. My main drink is wine- both red and white. I rarely drink spirits as i've gotten older. I'm partial to a nice G and T but rarely. Also the odd pint of Guinness- twould seem churlish not to drink our national drink!
eight -your point about the endorphin rush making your drink taste nicer is really interesting given my recent experience with all wine tasting as though it is corked.

I started with wine, moved to the martini (gin), and wine, then added the after dinner drink, then added the morning bloody mary or am champagne. Day time drinking, loved dark rum. Neat. But not glass after glass.
Now I am rather not attracted to anything but a dry white, or an old vine zin. I am curious where my taste for gin went, but I never buy it anymore. Once in while I will "taste" a friend's marty, but that's it.
Well in a pinch, vodca, but that's not for the taste.
The wine is my last hurdle.

my drink of choice has always been red (not white) wine, from the $60 bottle or more to $3 TJ. It's amazing how an expensive wine tastes compares to a cheap wine will taste but if you drink it like water the $3 TJ will suffice it just takes more. wow, how sad does that sound! I think for the first time i'm actually talking about what's been in my head for a long time and never wanting to go there before.

For me, for years, it was beer. But as I got older, I got fatter and it just didn't set well with me anymore. I still like a nice ice cold Stella Artois, or Corona on a hot day after I've been working in my balcony garden. But now it is sweet riesling, which is going on about 6 years now. I've tried all the other stuff, chardonnay is ok with dinner, but not a sipping wine (for me) in front of the tv or pc (HUGE headache in the am). The tannins in the red make me have huge puffs under my eyes when I wake in the morning (not a good look for work). I've never developed a taste for rum or gin. Got very, very sick at a very young age on whiskey and to this day the smell of it makes me want to vomit. Too bad that trigger doesn't work for me now! On the occasions I've switched to Vodka that never lasted long, I just hated the way I felt on it. So, my last stop is messing around with the different levels of riesling (i.e. cheap but still palatable). Dry is no good, the mediums are nice but more expensive and the sweet is cheapest but my stomach is paying a price on all that residual sugar. But it seems it's the only one I can tolerate at the moment. Perhaps soon on TSM I won't even be able to tolerate that!

Interesting question and one that I've given some thought in the last few years.

If the only alcohol around was Scotch and most other whiskeys, I'd never touch it and wouldn't have a problem. Bourbon and gin, I can have a drink...maybe two...but it would be hard to drink enough to feel it. I like tequila and can drink enough to get a little drunk but the stomach can't take much more than that. Rum I only like in a frozen drink and one will do. I always liked a cold beer or two on a hot day but since drinking one is like eating a half loaf of bread, I gave it up without much trouble. Wine I can enjoy normally, but it's too acidic to really drink too much of it or regularly. It's vodka for me. It's what turn the gears. It's what I look forward to. Sometimes chilled, up with a little splash of cranberry, but usually as a highball with club soda.

Whoa - such an interesting post! I love my Chardonnay - I buy Concha y Torro/ Fronterra Chardonnay mostly as it's good & cheap. I prefer good whites; not Pinos but like citrusy w/ heavy hints of grapefruit Savignon Blancs. I like reds too - Cabs mostly, if I'm eating beef or Italian. I like the Chards w/ heavy oak (too numerous to name when I am splurging) and cabs w/ same heavy notes...or blends like "Menage a Tois". I occasionally will drink hard liquor: a martini before a good dinner or a bit of Crown after...or Remi Martin cognac...yum!!

But alas, I am quite boring and regular: a couple of beers on the golf course, chardonnay to relax. The other on rare occasions. I am a functioning alcoholic, no question about it. And I hate it. I just want to be "normal"...whatever that means to me. I know. But need to sign off now.

XO

Guinness Stout only.

The aversion therapy I went through in November 2008 made it virtually impossible for me to drink anything else with much nausea. That treatment was quite successful for about 2 months before my alcohol deprived brain found a beverage that didn't make me nauseous... Guinness. Then I found TSM to cure the addiction itself.
