I've been shutting down and selling my house in Mexico over the past 2.5 weeks so haven't had time to report since early April.

I found it a whole lot easier than I thought to resist free alcohol on the plane down. And I was able to do 6 AF days while I was there with no cravings or suffering.

I did, however, get my first nalover. I forgot and took my 25 mg dose on a semi empty stomach. Drank half a bottle of red wine. Felt pretty drunk from that. Usually it would take at LEAST a bottle of wine to get to feeling the way I did.

Anyway, woke up around 3 AM feeling horible. Puked my guts out 6 times over the next 14 hours. Diarrhea too.

I've never had a nalover. And I was in Mexico. Home of many intestinal bugs. So at first I assumed it was something I'd eaten like a salad that wasn't washed well enough in purified water. Feared botulism also because the symptoms were kinda similar.

This was a huge bummer because I was on a tight schedule to finish everything up and because I was ill, I was basically useless for one full day.

After awhile, when I didn't get the other symptoms of ameobiosis or giardia or botulism, it occurred to me that what I was experiencing could be a 'nalover'. So I googled it and, of course, came up with this forum and many descriptions of a nalover being worse than any former hangover. Plus a number of people mentioning that red wine in particular seemed to set it off.

I don't think I will ever drink red wine again. That wasn't fun. Nor will I ever take nal again on an empty or even semi empti stomach!

After that experience and with 4 heavy days of work in the un airconditioned tropics to attend to, I stopped the nal and drinking for 3 days and only when I was ready to take the chance of getting ill again did I start back on 12.5 mg. I am obviously very sensitive to this drug!

I was flying first class from Mexico to Callie because I had 5 giant bags and 3 were free in first. I was easily able to resist the drink offers on flight one. On the second leg, once I was through customs and immigration and back on the plane, all work done basically, I 'treated' myself to two glasses of champagne an hour after the 12.5 nal.

Now because I'm also doing that cognitive therapy for alchol addiction workbook, I now recognize that the "I deserve an alcohol treat for all the hard work" is a trigger for me. But there really wasn't anything else to do to treat myself on an airplane so off I went.

However, and again, this is so surprising to me -- I stopped after 2 glasses and took a nap instead. That would NEVER have happened back in January of 2016 when I started the nal. So it seems to be working.

When I get home I'll get myself back to 25 mg and stay away from red wine. Will stay with 25 until I have NO symptoms and then try again to start bumping it up. But it seemed to have been working pretty good for me at 25 so perhaps that's enough.

Anyway, wanted to throw in my 2 cents re the nalover. It was extremely unfun. And I add my observation to the common body of knowledge here -- I got it with half a bottle of red wine and 25 mg of nal taken an hour before on an empty stomach.

OW! I would have figured Montezuma's Revenge as well, but it sounds like you're right. I'm still cutting it back to 12.5 and still getting the weird SE's, but I cut out the Gabapentin so we'll see how that goes. Still making progress though and I'm glad to hear you are too.

nzspeak had a nasty nalover along those lines, but didn't have the comfort of his own abode.

thanks for the update. Nalovers suck, don't they?

 NALovers  I agree that the red wine does seem to trigger the NAL overs. Great job on the plane - that is always tough!
