DOMD

Sinclairs study was using Finnish units (1 unit=11 g of alcohol). An Australian unit is 10g of alcohol. US is 14g. Japan, btw is almost 20g!!

Dear Domd,

I am very new here and have not started my program yet. But I have been following everyone progress including yours and I only want to say something encouraging to you...

You said you were fairly upset about the other night when you went out with freinds...that you felt bad about pissing off a friend, etc...remember dear that you were not the only one "under influence" ---your friend may have blown things out of proportion...Just wanted to remind you of that and to tell you I think you are very brave, and very cool....when we are out in groups and everyone is drinking, its easy for everyone to get a little too sensitive.

Keep up the great, pioneering work you are doing. Someday, you'll be on the cured list, and I'll be the one posting my progress....and hopefully, you'll be there to cheer me on....

Very best wishes!
pyrata

ps : for DOMD and everyone:

I am interested to find out if there is a chart somewhere that compares each country and "average units".

Cultural attitudes/ideas about drinking is something that interests me --- I find the Americans to be the most "prohibitive" when it comes to defining "normal" or "social drinking"....it's odd to see that the Japanese def. of one unit is 20 g???? What????
LOL

Any info you can point me toward is appreciated....back to your regular program! Forgive the temporary interruption

DOMD

yes, I find the numbers in sinclairs study very low. We have speculated here before that this may be source of the overly optimistic, but often-quoted timeframe of 3-6 months for cure. Our experience here is that it is often (but by no means always) longer than that.

pyrata - you are quite correct IMO - Americans do tend to have a very 'prohibitive' attitude to normal drinking in many situations I've encountered. On the other hand there is far too much tolerance IMO in the UK and Ireland for public drunknenness. There is a happy medium in there somewhere no doubt.
