Hi Everybody!
Dr. G checking in on ya
I don't come here too often because alcohol is now (USUALLY) a pretty inconsequential part of my life. I drink sometimes. Every once in a while I have a hangover, but usually I don't. I am still 100% compliant with the method.
I like to come back here from time to time to re-read my old posts, and offer encouragement to anyone struggling. I am always shocked at my old posts because my state of mind back then was so fundamentally different than it is now that its a good reminder but a big shock to travel back there.
I found Nal in 2012 by googling for something that could lessen my hangovers and maybe help me to stop pissing the bed every weekend. It's sad and funny how low my standards were then and how little I thought of myself as a result. Recently, I have been getting more and more FUGKING PI22ED OFF that the recovery industry and the cult of AA have so thoroughly snowed the medical industry that real relief is being denied addicts like us who are suffering and dying. Five years ago I told myself I was a fun party guy with just a bit of a wild streak. Now looking back I can plainly see that I had crippling alcoholism, I was headed for an inevitable divorce, alienating my friends, and demolishing my career just when I needed to be focusing on it the most. Now my wife and I are a team again, we have two adorable young daughters who will never be driven around by a drunk dad and who won't be taught that the only path to happiness is in a bottle. My career is back on track, after some really rough catching up, and my new friends think I am fun to get a beer with!
Anyway, let's keep this short for you and my benefit.
Dr. G's DO'S and DON'TS. These have helped me immensely.
DO follow the protocol every time. The protocol is a literal life saver. You really want to get cute and see how much you can get away with? Take the pill before EVERY TIME YOU DRINK.
DON'T drink liquor, pretty much ever. This is still true for me years later and with things under pretty good control. It's sooooo easy to overshoot the mark and while it isn't as manic as the old days, it's too easy to meander aimlessly into a blackout stupor and wake up on someone's lawn (true story. Yikes). Beer at parties/bars, wine at dinner, liquor at never.
DO substitute rather than deny yourself! On the beach in Mexico? Desperately want a margarita? Have a corona with a lime instead! I promise it will be every bit as relaxing and refreshing.
DON'T drink every day once you can help it. Waking up early, without a trace of a hangover is one of the genuine pleasures of this program. Check it out, it's great!
DO keep tracking your drinks. Seems to help.
DON'T Open that second bottle of wine. Down this path lies hangover.
DO get a keychain pill-holder, or wallet pill-holder, or some other way to always have an emergency Nal, ready to pop.
Anyway, good luck everyone. Stick with it, spread the word to fellow drunks, and enjoy your lives!!!
