I'm considering coming off the nal for a week to see if the tramadol (opiod) will really help with my back pain. I'm in such a dilemma, as I don't know if I can trust myself not to drink whilst not on the nal!

I am waiting for a nerve root block which is a steroid injection and that can be taken with nal.

Thomas what do you take the opioids for, and what do you use instead?

Recreationally sadly Summer. The funny thing is, I don't even like opiates, they give me terrible nausea. I've had problems with drugs most of my life, 90% of the time because I'm drunk.

Your in a it of a pickle. If you do take a break, really try not to have a drink. That was my downfall last time. I started messing around, skipping doses. You wouldn't believe how quick I regressed. Have you long to wait for your treatment?

You're older and wiser this time round and you have more tools in your toolbox. You've learnt lessons from your past experience with TSM which will help you with it this time. It worked before and based on yesterday it seems as though it will work again. I think you're right about needing some extra willpower along the way, especially once the Nal has done it's job and extinction has occurred. I too was waiting for total indifference to magically happen, but it didn't and I had to work on changing things up a bit...there can be a lot of ingrained habits and associations with drinking that need work to change.
Wishing you all the best.

Your right about all the above Ruthy. I've read every success story on here and on the other board and only a small percentage just become totally indifferent. Most have to come to the decision to be abstinent. TSM for kills the fun and makes it just not as enjoyable. So you get to the point (or should do) when you say to yourself.. Whats the point.

Looking back I think I became indifferent after 3 or 4 weeks. Once I popped a pill, most of the time I wish I hadn't and just had 2-3 beer to keep the process working. I also though that with every session I was working the program. This is sort of true but looking back.. You should never change you drinking habits just to try and speed things up.

This time round I'm basically gonna try and abstain from booze as much as possible ans use the Nal for when I break.

Its just not fun anymore. I heard a saying once before that sums it all up....

----Stop the train I want to get off----

Thomas....My treatment is not until 28 th March and I cannot bear the pain until then.

Just spoken with a new doctor today, and we've agreed the pain comes first. I will try not to drink. But, can't trust myself. But I can trust myself to not go mad!! is.....go over the top! So from tomorrow, I'm stopping the nal. Give it 2 weeks. If no improvement in the pain, then back on the nal. Nal is also making me depreseed. I suffer fro depression anyway, and it's making me worse!

Fingers crossed. x

I personally couldn't stick tooth pain for very long either. I don't deal well with depression either. I've only ever been depressed coming off of drugs but I know that feeling.

Sumerglow,

I've battled back pain for the better part of 20 years. I have had nerve root blocks, acupuncture, massage, surgery, witch doctors.... You name it, I've tried it (including opiates and alcohol). The best thing that worked for me was something called vertebral axial decompression or VAX-D. Sadly, I did this after surgery and had amazing results. There are updates to the treatment, but if you Google "spinal decompression" you will find your way to what the therapy is all about. It works for lumbar spinal issues primarily, but there are therapies for thoracic and cervical problems as well. Whatever you do, try something like this before even considering surgery.

Thomas,

Glad to hear that you are back at it. Keep at it and it will work. It hasn't been in my time frame, but it is working. For me, drinking with or without NAL ceased to be fun quite some time ago. I just want the voices to stop.....

Thank you JMS I will google that. I wasn't contemplating surgery yet. Just the nerve root blocks.

Had a few beer (light ones ;) ) sitting in the fridge last night from the weekend (unheard of) and thought, what the hell, I'll kill them off. Ended up having 2 and getting fed up half way down the 3rd. I hope to God its working like the first time around. It seems like it is but you know what its like... speaking too soon and all that.

Thats me hopefully to the weekend. My insides still haven't fully recovered from my Vodka binge the week before last. I'm really trying to get as many AF days in as possible.

Thomas,

It sounds like it's working as it has in the past. That is great news. I am finding the same effects, it's simply not that appealing any longer. With each passing week the interest continues to fade, and I am so grateful for that. It has opened up a whole new world of discovery for me. I have thought that I was having happy ears, but I really think I am rounding a corner to a much brighter future.
