I am being prepped for a crown on my tooth next week. Has anyone had to have dental work done while taking Nal and if so, did you stop the Nal prior?

Hi there,
I've had the usual dental work done in the last year (including crowns) and didn't do anything different re: Nal. I think the ('caine) drugs are not blocked by Nal. But check w/ your dentist to see what they use, and then you can use this link to see if it's on the list.

Yeah, your worst problem w/ the crown will probably be paying for it; it might cause a spike in units...

Thanks for your reply Chrissie! Yeah, even with dental ins. it will take a payment plan to pay for this crown :? As if sitting in a dental chair for two hours isn't bad enough!

I have found, through experience, that the pain injections are not as effective when I am on NAL. I remember reading about this on the website some time ago, but forgot about it when i went to have some dental work done. It took 3X as many shots to get me to a tollerable level of pain. If/when i go in to have more work done, I will back off of the NAL for a few days prior.

The only thing you really need to worry about is the possibility of taking opiate based pain meds. DON'T mix NAL with meds like Vicodin. Some have mixed the two and the results are VERY miserable.

Make sure you have 5-10 days between your last pain med and restarting NAL and visa versa.

Other than that, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Local anesthetic would not be affected by Nal. Not even close to being affected in any way. Local anesthesia affects the electrical conduction of the nerve. You wont need pain meds for a simple crown, so no worries.

FYI, dental work went just fine! I ended up needing more shots simply because the numbness wore off before he drilling was done but that happened the last time I got a crown and that was before the nal. Thanks again for the input :)
