Hi, I'm new to TSM, after 15 years in AA, then ten years out. I started taking Naltrexone last week, and immediately noticed the initial halo effect. However, even on 25mg I have been having a terrible time with sleep, essentially watching myself dream and never going into deep sleep. I've tried a number of supplements to counteract this (magnesium, glycine, melatonin, passionflower, theanine), but nothing seems to dent it. I know that eventually it will wear off, but I seem particularly sensitive to Naltrexone. I'm wondering how people have coped with the insomnia, other than just waiting it out?

hi Utican,

welcome to the forum & TSM :)

sorry to hear you're having trouble with sleep - I can definitely sympathize, I struggle with it myself. I've found OTC sleep aids - Benadryl, Nytol, etc. - to be helpful, although as you say, I think time is the main thing as your body gets used to sleep with less, or no, alcohol in your system

all the best

Hi Badger, thanks for the reply. I think it's the Naltrexone rather than alcohol withdrawal that's keeping me up at this point, and I suppose I'll just have to wait for the side effects to go away. I'd love to pop some benadryl, but it tends to have a paradoxical effect on me and keep me awake and jumpy, and I've just gotten off Ambien about three weeks ago. I seem to fall asleep fine after taking Naltrexone, but wake up at 3 or 4, then am completely unable to get back to sleep, even if I don't take it every day. It makes it difficult to continue taking it knowing that I won't sleep.

Hi utican, I found the first few days, weeks I had terrible side effects from the Nal and it made me edgy, nervous and tense sometimes at night and I had really bad sleeplessness too. After the first week or so the side effects disappeared and now it's just alcohol that wakes me up at 2,3 or 4AM.
I hope that is the case with you and you will be able to sleep better soon.
Nal On!

Thanks all for your replies. I reduced the amount of the Nal to 12.5mg for a couple of days and was able to get some great sleep, and will now start to increase again slowly and hope for the best. Now about the ringing in my ears...
