I was reading this thread (http://www.thesinclairmethod.net/community/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3622&p=60894&sid=cc358c1241246d4f199d30144dba972d&sid=cc358c1241246d4f199d30144dba972d#p60894) and left a comment about my experience with naltrexone and tramadol. JoeSixPack suggested that I create a new thread about it, so that it would be easier for people to find the information, so I will do that.

For context, this was my comment:

Quote:
I have been taking low-doses of tramadol most days for the seratonin effect, which augments the SSRI that I take daily. (Treatment of depression is an uncommon but not-unheard-of off-label use for tramadol.) Been doing this for a couple of years, especially in the winter months when I get seasonal affective disorder.

Several times in the four weeks I have been on TSM, I have had really unpleasant side effects from Nal. Nausea and general malaise. Now I wonder if it is because it is essentially putting me into tramadol withdrawal. Does that make any sense? Is it likely that I will need to just drop the tramadol completely? I already know that it doesn't do much on days after I have taken Nal the previous day.

I just checked back in today to see Joe's suggestion, and left a follow-up comment:

Quote:
I'm really thinking this is what was happening. I've not taken tramadol for several days now, but back up to 37mg of Nal (slowly making my way back up to the full 50), and I have not had the nausea or other supposed side-effects. I even went one over limit last night, and feel fine today.

I do suspect that what I was experiencing was rapid tramadol withdrawal. Sucks, because I like my tramadol, but it can't be helped. Now that I know, this can likely be avoided.

Bottom line: Be careful with even mild opioid analgesics like tramadol. Best practice seems to be to give it a few days to clear your system before starting or taking naltrexone. What I thought was a "nal-over" seems to have been tramadol withdrawal instead. It was very discouraging. It's good to know I can probably continue with TSM and not have what I thought were the really unpleasant side-effects.
