I just read an article on Forbes called Are You Drinking Too Much? The Myth Of Moderation.

This peaked my interest. I found it interesting that different organization have what they consider moderation and healthy (I am not sure of the source for I believe the writer is a wine critic). But one thing struck a never was what she wrote a doctor friend advised her to adhere to the 1, 2, 3, rule (one drink a day, no more that two at one time, and no more than three days a week). I have never heard this before, but boy did it make sense. Most doctors will tell you moderation or guide lines of an organization.

So as anyone heard of the 1,2,3 rule? Because that is a new one for me.

Interesting article. I have never heard of the 1, 2, 3 rule but I would be happy with 6 units per week and 4 alcohol free days. :D

My thoughts as well; however, if I was at that point I think I would only drink on special occasions (too many empty calories in al).
To be at the point to where I don't have feel like I need a drink before bed will be when I know I have made true progress. With me I think it is more about habit, but we will see tonight. This will be my first af day without any type of nal. over.

I guess my thought is that everyone needs to be satisfied with what works for them. My former in-laws RELIGIOUSLY had their cocktails every night; one per night, but I doubt they ever missed unless sick. It was a ritual, a way to end the day and be together. My brother in law does the same thing, not every day, but quite frequently. I do not think that any of them were problem drinkers or alcoholics, because they never wanted more, they just ENJOYED their ritual. Sometimes they didn't even finish their drinks. But had they informed their doctors of the habit they would have been lectured to cut back. Why? I can't stand when doctors/whoever try to arbitrarily impose limits on others and call them alcoholics or problem drinkers if they go over those limits. It is especially interesting that what the American medical establishment arbitrarily picked as limits is way less that what doctors in Europe recommend. America has a Puritanical streak when it comes to alcohol, it is viewed as wrong: examples: prohibition, children in Florida not allowed to sit at a bar, bars viewed as seedy and wrong. Drinking age 21: completely unrealistic, so therefore an invitation for college students/young adults to break the law. For many many people alcohol is just not a problem, and I don't think it should be looked upon as something wicked or sinful. It's just that for some of us it IS a problem, and we therefore need to take responsibility for deciding what is right for ourselves, and setting our own limits that work for us. For many of us that means not drinking, because we simply cannot stop at one. I am still struggling to figure that out for myself, but I sure as hell don't want someone else, especially someone with NO understanding of my situation, telling me what limits I should set for myself.

I will get off my soapbox now. XOXO Newlife.

Newlife,

I agree with what you are saying. I didn't mean to strike a never. I just thought it was interesting and I have never heard it before. Next time I will think twice before sharing.

This has sparked a great discussion jaba which is what forums are for, for sharing different views, we don't have to all agree.

I would have said that rule is cool, but alcoholics can't stick to rules which is why they need help to quit and why we are here using TSM.

Even habitual drinkers can't/don't want to stop.

Really good programme on the radio (R4 if you are in the UK) yesterday about older drinkers.

One guy was in denial, another quit after keeping a diary and alternating AF weeks with drinking weeks and writing notes. Reading the notes he thought, hey I don't want or need alcohol in my life, and went back to find out how to quit.

Others were sad stories, and one very worried woman who had chosen not to try and give up, and she was scared.

Anything that's useful is welcome and you never know it might work for someone.

Thanks UK Blonde,

I just hate rubbing people the wrong way. And I wish I was in the UK to hear that program because it sounds like something I would love to hear. Who is it and the name of the program for sometimes they will have a pod cast.

Jaba,

Please don't assume that because someone doesn't agree with an article you posted that you rubbed them the wrong way. The content rubbed them the wrong way. I found the article interesting and I am glad that you posted it.

Dee,

I am just an emotional roller coster at this stage of my life, and I am trying to be more sensitive to others because of my state of mind. I am glad you found the article interesting as well, for it always surprises me about the limits they try to impose on people with al. and how different organizations have a difference of opinion (except when you no longer have control)!

Have a great day

BBC Radio 4 You and Yours 25th August 2015.

Yeah, you might have to get used to that. That was one thing I had to accept when I started to get to know myself, that you can't please everyone.
