Howdy,

Here are links to on-line calculators that'll help you figure out exactly how many units you're drinking in whatever country you drink in, and in whatever volume measurement you choose:

http://www.cleavebooks.co.uk/scol/ccalcoh1.htm
or
http://www.cleavebooks.co.uk/scol/ccalcoh3.htm

FYI -- to convert UK units to US units, multiply by .564, and to convert US to UK units, multiply by 1.77.

Hi netty, thanks too, I did the math! And my 55 US units=97.35 UK.
That was a simple formula and I appreciate your help, now I have a better understanding. And I did the math! So that makes me feel a tad bit mathematically competent. ART

I'm sure this has been asked before, but can I check the difference between UK and US units?

Pages 114 to 115 in The Cure for Alcoholism shows this:

Drinking Measures
In the United States, one drink unit is defined as having one-half ounce of pure alcohol, such as the following:58
10–12 oz of beer (4–5% alcohol) = 1 drink
8–12 oz of wine cooler (4–6% alcohol) = 1 drink
4– 5 oz of table wine (9–12% alcohol) = 1 drink
2.5 oz of fortified wine (20% alcohol) = 1 drink
1.25 oz of 80 proof distilled spirits (40% alcohol) = 1 drink
1 oz of 100 proof distilled spirits (50% alcohol) = 1 drink

International measures:
1 bottle (330 ml) beer (4.7% alcohol content) = 1 drink
1 mug of beer (4.7% alcohol) = 1.5 drinks
1 bottle strong beer (6% alcohol) = 1.3 drinks
1 mug strong beer (10% alcohol) = 2 drinks
1 glass (12 cl) wine (10% alcohol) = 1 drink
1 bottle (75 cl) wine (10% alcohol) = 6.5 drinks
1 glass (8 cl) fortified wine (20% alcohol) = 1 drink
1 bottle (75 cl) fortified wine (20% alcohol) = 9.5 drinks
1 shot (4 cl) spirits (40% alcohol) = 1 drink
1 small bottle (50 cl) spirits (40% alcohol) = 12 drinks
1 bottle (70 cl) spirits (40% alcohol) = 17.5 drinks
Wines include champagne.
Fortified wines include sherry, port, and vermouth.
Spirits include vodka, gin, whiskey, rum, cognac, and liquors.
Upper Limits of Moderate Drinking59
Men: Twenty-four units per week or five units on any sin﷓
gle drinking session
Women: Eighteen units per week or four units on any single drinking session

If you check the footnote (#59) for the reference in the book (Upper limits of Moderate Drinking), its source is a research paper from Finland, where their government specifies 1 unit = 12 grams of pure ethanol. The UK governments specifies 1 unit = 7.9 grams, therefore, a Finnish unit = 1.5 UK units. Note that while the referenced research paper lists 21 units as the upper limit for men (this would be 31.5 units UK), it also designates 16 units (not 18 units) as the upper limit for women.
