Hi everyone

I wasn't sure where to put this but thought it something very important that people using Naltrexone should know about. Some countries have Naltrexone on their 'controlled' or 'banned' substance lists, most notably Dubai. If you travel to or via Dubai it's advisable to take along the original prescription, plus supporting letter from your Doctor. Baclofen is also on their controlled list, as well as a whole host of other quite 'innocent' looking drugs (especially codeine based medicines, cough mixture etc). Having 'drugs' in your body is also considered smuggling, and it's not just a simple case of confiscation they will arrest you and hold you until they satisfy themselves you hold the medication legitimately, or decide what the powder or pills you carry actually contain.

My GP was very supportive with this but she did warn although she supplied a letter explaining why I needed to take Naltrexone it may not be enough if the authorities decided they didn't like it - and remember Nal is associated with drug abuse which is a definite no-no in various countries.

Just something to check up on if you do have plans to travel.

Hi UKblonde. I just happened to be checking in here to see what I should expect if I try to bring my nal with on a vacation coming up. We're going from US to costa rica, and I really want to have my nal with me. Do you or any other readers have any idea what I should expect?

Cat,
Good to hear from you again! Last year I traveled to CR 4 or 5 times for work and took Nal everytime with no problems at all. They will run your luggage through an x-ray machine, but don't ask any questions. I'm not even sure that the machine works ;) , since I have never seen them stop or question anybody. Enjoy your trip, I'm actually headed down there again next week.

Thanks so much for the reassurance, Diver. I've been doing very well with the nal lately, and want to have many non-hungover mornings down in CR on vacation. :) Buenos días!

To be sure try and find out if there are any medication restrictions when entering the country you are visiting. Sure 99% of the time you just get your bag shoved through an x-ray machine before you get on the plane, but they are usually looking for bombs and weapons at that point. When going through customs on entering other countries they don't usually use x-ray machines, instead they sometimes pull people over randomly, either tipped off or because they look suspicious.

Wow, I had no idea. That's scary that you could get detained for something like naltrexone! Thanks for the info, UKB.

Places like Dubai and a few other countries have quite an extensive list of medications which are 'banned'. Many routinely prescribed drugs, and some cough medicines containing certain things. Acne treatments and a load of other stuff. Whilst they probably won't look in your bags, it's not worth it if for some reason they do - from the research I did it would appear in those countries they tend to lock you up first, then work out if you are legit or not. Not worth the hassle.
