I am now commencing my 15th week on Nal and I am solely a wine drinker. I'd heard about poeple finding their wine distasteful and it has happened to me now twice in the last week, so maybe I am making progress

Great! It's nice to hear this is a common milestone. Hopefully, since we like it a little less, we will soon drink it a little less.

Yep, my delicious warm red wine turned to sour, stinky, murky hangover fluid. Of course my tequila turned to paint thinner, and my beer turned to barley-foam. I guess that's why I don't drink much anymore.

But the warm glow that used to come from alcohol (we never really forget) now comes so much more easily from the intoxication of life.

Don't be alarmed or surprised when your taste for wine and enthusiasm for drinking it return: that's called the "extinction burst" and is all part of the process. The honeymoon is proof it's working for you so you should be very encouraged. Chances are low you are in the 20% the method doesn't work for. :D

I guess I'd like to clarify Nick's accurate statement.

For those that are pre-cure (within the first several months of treatment), the extinction burst is the most likely cause of the bad tasting drinks. And if there has been an effect caused by the Naltrexone within the pre-cure period, it is highly likely, you are going to be cured.

For those that are post-cure, there are some for whom the alcoholic beverage taste has changed. This condition is true for Firebird, for me, and others. I assume this has occurred because the drinks now taste like they actually taste to an unaddicted mind. I remember how terrible beer tasted when I first had it as a youth. It tastes like that to me now. I don't really like it that much (most, not all, of the time). Occasionally, it tastes OK, but it is rare these days. And the beauty of it, is I couldn't be happier about it. It is just another beverage that I would prefer not to have most of the time.

Bob

I guess it's one of those wildly variable things. I did occasionally have situations pre-cure where the *first* sip of my wine tasted foul, but it usually ended up tasting fine by the end of the first glass. Now I drink two glasses one night a week, typically. My wife recently suggested opening one of the cellar wines we collected a couple years ago and oh my goodness, it was unbelievably delicious. However, I practically scowled when I realized we were going to finish the bottle and it meant I would have ... *gasp* ... three glasses in one night. Darn ... broke my streak!

Nonetheless, despite the 'bump' it will make on my precious graph it was so wonderful to enjoy an exquisite wine but not be greedily eyeing the pour to make sure I got my fair share ... happily saying "well that was nice" and moving on once it was gone.

I simply cannot get over how thoroughly rewired things are. I have my life back.

Hmmm... I'm with Mario. Not exactly envious. It's more like:

"Moving on once it was gone... :?: :?: :?: How does that work?"

I can't wait to find out!

7 weeks in: Red Wine tastes a bit strange for me on the first sip or two. usually this goes away though. on some nights I get tired of the taste though. Sometimes I find myself switching drinks because I get tired of the taste of one kind, but still want to drink; or maybe I don't really want to be drink but think I should be drinking. drinking has become more out of habit and less out of necessity it seems. I also think I switch to red wine rather than beer because beer fills me up so much. that didn't used to bother me as I was so buzzed I didn't notice it.
