How about taking a poll of: "What is your drink of choice"?

Unofficially, it seems to me that here, wine is the preferred substance of abuse. I wonder why, if that is indeed the case.

I may be way wrong. Can anyone (LoOp perhaps?) create a spreadsheet or something that shows the range of this group's preferences? Putting that in the stats, as well as times of use and others' experiences, could "possibly" help assist in predicting outcomes as well as treatment. It might also provide additional data for Dr. Eskapa to crunch. Different kinds of alcoholic beverages may act differently on neurotransmitters than the pure grain alcohol that Dr. Escapa's lab animals were fed and lost interest in. (I would too.) I still happen to love wine and its mellow effects. :)

We're explorers. It's just a thought...

Mike

I don't think ethanol comes in shades Mike. Is there anything in an alcoholic beverage beside water and AL that crosses the blood-brain barrier?

I like the question Mike.

Because, if you take into consideration, wine for example, it has such an infinite amount of varieties. And pschologically, unlike rats, there is taste. And grain has none...well I guess it does...

I remember when I was sober for those 4.5 years, I wasn't always obsessing about it, but periodically, I would see a great red wine that I used to drink (Rombauer comes to mind) or a great pale ale,...and I would sigh. I would say "Well I guess I used up my drink tickets for this life", and it's the unsaid thing in AA, a lot are upset about losing that "privilege", or at least I was. Again not all the time....to answer your question,

I love good red wine, (generally cabs but I can go anywhere even very dry chardonnay), Johhny Walker Black (I feel its significantly better than red and the other ones more expensive aren't worth the extra cost), Pale ale (Dogfish 60 minute), Sierra Nevada, Vodka Martini with olives, Good tequila, drunk slowly.

I pray that one day I'll have a choice and may be able to have just one. not yet though. I'm 30 minutes after my Nal and I can feel it so I'm going in for my first Martini.

I'm laughing a little at this - yes, back in the days I was experimenting w/ AA, I couldn't fathom the thought of not having a glass of wine w/ dinner. EVER!! No to mention that perfect martini before a great steak dinner...a bottle of a delicious cab with...a glass of Remi Martin after...

ahhhhhhhh - good times. I drink like a normal person in this scenario. I cannot and will not give this up. Hope my "ehhhhhhhh" only kicks in when I want it to...and soon!!

Nite nite, Angels. LOL
Xo

I agree with Loop and I doubt the type of alcohol will have a significant impact on extinction.

That being said, I drink it all, and all for effect. I like spirits, especially vodka mixed with any fruit juice. However, rum, whisky, gin, scotch or any other spirit you can name have been on my list of regular drinks for years. I like wine, red or white, good or bad. I don't like the taste of beer but I've been drinking it for effect since tenth grade (1980). I have abused every type of alcohol you can purchase at the liquor store -- I'm an equal opportunity abuser.

I don't think you can discount psychological effects such as taste, circumstances, memories, patterns and such when discussing conditioning and extinction. These things all make for different "exits" on the "neural superhighway" of addiction. Like I said in another post, I have practiced TSM mostly on wine and beer, and I have these drinks well under control. Just the taste of these sets me up for a gentle evening of two or three drinks. However, I am not yet prepared for the taste or immediate effect of a big shot of tequila, so if I start right off with that, it can send my whole night off in the wrong direction. This gives me something new to work on. Or maybe tequila will be my "big night out" drink of choice! I don't know yet, but I do know that different types of drinks definitely have different effects on me.

LOL, me too.

The posts in this thread are great.

I'm having a hard time thinking up some way to organize such a subjective thing though Mike. Like Nick, my favorite drink is alcohol. You're thought is absolutely relevant though, and Firebird cleared it up quite nicely.

Upon further review, alcohol is just alcohol for me, but that's just me. I never liked the taste of any of it, just the effect. I'd have drunk used car oil if it didn't kill me and got me the same buzz. I can definitely see that if one has an affinity for a certain type of booze that this has implications for extinction. And the biggest implication is to take the drink you like best and drink on it with naltrexone, over and over again, until your craving is extinguished.
