Hi TSMers

What are your experiences of the NALOVER? Do you find it like a hangover or different? I find it's a very depressing tired demotivated feeling. Do you experience it every time you take a Nal or only when you have say more than 4 drinks. Does the Nalover put you off the nal and therefore the drink? Does it tempt you to have a drink without a Nal? I am tempted tonight because of feeling so tired and demotivated but dont worry Im not. I've had a nal so am waiting an hour.

Is the Nalover worse when youve had a few AFDs beforehand?
Would love to get your thoughts!

MD

I think I get something akin to a Nalover, but much milder. I'll have to test it by taking a dose on an AF day, it may well just be SE's from the Nal itself.

MD - seeing as I rarely had a FEW AF days, I cannot say if my Nal-overs were worse due to having AF days! I would liken a Nal-Over to a REALLY bad hangover - and it didn't matter how much I had had -sometimes my Nal-overs were after as few as two drinks - other times after 4. I rarely went over 6 and yet never had a Nal-over on that many - there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to them as far as I can see. I only had two REALLY bad ones and I had had four each time the night before. I know that Jaba said that hers would have her in bed thinking she was dying - the two bad ones that I had had me in bed - and I NEVER get sick enough to stay in bed so my family were rather concerned! And NO - the Nal-Over did not put me off the nal - it just made me a tad more wary about drinking. I had too much invested to stop taking the nal and in my head there was no alternative - so I soldiered on! If you are REALLY serious about getting control of the AL, then the Nal-Over will not get in your way!

Hugs, Maggie

Pretty much the same as Maggie. Only had a few Nal Overs and those were when I had been drinking excessively, and like an extremely bad hangover. One thing though, pre Nal when I had a hangover (and in those days I had to drink A LOT to have a hangover) I would then be craving al the next day, that doesn't happen now. Hope that helps.

Boo brings up a point I can relate too. I have never experienced what is generally accepted to be a Nal-over, a hangover worsened by the use of Naltrexone. In fact since I started TSM about 9 months ago I can count on one hand the number of days I have been 'drunk', in quotes because it was nothing like it was in the past prior to TSM. But on a few occasions I have drank too much and did indeed feel some negative hangover effects the next day but they seemed like ordinary hangover effects not enhanced by Naltrexone with the exception of one thing. With the exception of one very very big thing and that was the absence of craving. Craving is not even the appropriate word it was more like need. Kind of like if you don't eat for a couple of days you absolutely NEED food. That is the way a hangover was for me, I needed alcohol to cure it or else!

That is completely gone now and so when the effects of the hangover wear off I am left a normal person not one who is desperate to get a fix.

my experiences have been similar to Ocean's. when I did experience a Nalover, it wasn't terribly strong, but there was NO craving. just felt kind of crappy for a few hours....

And we don't know why they happen sometimes and not other times? I have to confess the idea of a Nalover worries me. I'm not good with hangovers now. I don't crave more alcohol during a hangover though, quite the opposite.

Maybe the worry of having one will help me decide to stop at 1 or 2 drinks more easily.

Valerie - I have no idea why they happen sometimes and not other times or every time - I never used to 'do' hangovers pre Nal - I would not let myself drink enough - but that did not stop me having Nal-Overs once I started nal - and they are truly wicked! I could never drink the next day either after drinking too much the night before - even not getting a classic hangover - if I had say more than 6, I would not feel good the next day (pre Nal) but would not have a hangover as such. If the thought of a Nal-Over stops you drinking too much then that is good in my opinion - you would still be drinking so still getting the benefit of the nal and extinction - without the hangover! A win-win situation!

Hugs, Maggie

Im having a Nalover today after 5 drinks. I hadn't had a drink in 3 days. It was Friday night and had had a terrible day and week at work, had fought with friend and BF. I really went a step backwards with trying to use alcohol to make me feel better. It doesn't. I remember a bit of a rush on the first beer too- makes me think I need to go up from 25 again.

However it is not as bad as having a huge night and being worried about driving over the limit the next day when I take my daughter to netball.....

That thought has made me feel so much better!
Thank you brain for reminding me of that one!

Thanks for more info, Maggie. Yes, I think it's a good thing for me to be concerned about Nalovers, too. ;) That kind of disincentive doesn't work really well for me usually, but it might work here. I really hate the feeling of being hungover the next day and I have to confess, my hangovers are pretty mild. The low level headache and lethargy really affects me though.
