After a long wait I finally had my appointment yesterday and it went really well. I was feeling bad about being what I think of as an AA failure. The doctor said the success rate for AA is actually low but there are no statistics since it is an anonymous organization. She didn't think AA was a bad idea though. She put me on Nal and also changed my antidepressant. I've been on Celexa for years and have still been depressed. She said that drinking heavily can cause some problems in the body so she suggested I take Omega 3, magnesium, vitamin D and a few others.

I got my perscription for Naltrexone. I haven't taken it yet. My husband is out of town and I am worried I'll be sick when I take it the first time (I am terrified of nausea and vomiting) and I want him home when I try it. He gets back Sat.

So, wish me luck! And thank you for the support. Reading messages here is very helpful.

That's great, Random! Check this link for the info on how to start up on the Nal (reduced dose, etc):

Did you discuss the nausea issue with your doc?

Thank you for the replies. I did talk about my fear of nausea and vomiting. The doctor actually said that nausea is not a very common side effect but based on what I've read here it sounds like it actually is.

It may be the mix of alcohol and Nal. Perhaps you could try a half or quarter dose and simply not drinking, maybe try that for a couple/three days, then introduce alcohol. Nal is often prescribed to quash craving for alcohol while you're maintaining abstinence, it just doesn't work in the long term that way and people often stop taking it and go back to drinking (oohh, they were SO close...).

I know this is terrible but I haven't had an alcohol free day in a year! I just hope I end up having at least one or 2.

Well, you'll have more than that by the time you get done with the bulk of TSM.

You may find that when you take the Naltrexone, it's a lot easier to resist drinking. If you don't make it and have a drink, at least you're protected. That would just be for a test run, as TSM recommends against forcing alcohol free days in general.
