If you're happily abstinent, it doesn't make sense (to me) to start drinking just to extinguish. Your brain will already make repairs over time. It'll take years instead of months, but if you're happy as you are, that's not a problem.
If you're unhappily abstinent (bugged by strong cravings, not sure you can maintain abstinence), then it makes more sense to look at other options.
I'm a little surprised that someone would prescribe naltrexone to a patient who was already abstinent. How did that come about?
