I am so happy to have been led to this forum by a friend on MWO. I got a prescription for Nal from my doctor but had no idea how to use it! They told me to take 50 mg before bed, which is not helpful.

I have the book and have been reading it. I'll post more later, have to go, but look forward to meeting all of you. AG

I do have a question. What if I'm in a car accident or something where I need a pain pill??? How long does it take for the Nal to get out of your system so if you truly need an opiod it will work??

Just curious.

BTW, here are my stats from last week from my drinking log:

22 units/1 AF day

Some do use a bracelet or card to alert physicians in the case of an emergency. Searching on 'bracelet' here on this site shows that someone simply taped a note to the back of their driver's license.

Thanks for posting your first week results! How much were you drinking per week before starting TSM, btw?

When I first began TSM I printed out an emergency card from the Vivitrol website. Now having about one drink per month I should probably take it out.

I am sure that this is totally the wrong thing to say - BUT I did not carry anything saying I was taking nal - I figured that if I was in that much pain I would also be conscious enough to tell them I was taking nal - and if I was unconscious it wouldn't matter - but as I said I am sure that is the wrong thing to say and I will probably be shot down in flames for saying it .....

Hugs, Maggie

I am not carrying anything, but it scares me.

It scares me too! And what about the dentist? We live in somewhat of a small town so we see our dentist sometimes out socializing. I haven't had a cavity in a very long time but with my luck I'll have some the next visit!! Ha! I am going to fill out a card for my husband on the mg and name so he has it.

Joe - I tend to go up and down on my AL consumption, depending on if I was in the mood to try and white knuckle it. Most of the time I just couldn't do it though. My weekly units averaged in the 30s. I didn't have too many weeks higher than that, but I was consistently in the 4-6 almost daily range. Enough to not feel well in the mornings and make me less productive than I am capable of being.

What I am noticing now is that feeling of guilt and shame for not being able to abstain is gone. That is such a relief. I know I have a loooong way to go but having one less thing to beat myself up about is helpful. And hopeful.

I am reading, logging, following the golden rule. My next goal is to be more mindful . . . do I really want that next one? Or have I had enough?

Thanks all, it is good to be here. Any tips or advice are welcomed!!

AG - I do not think the dentist is a problem - the lidocaine will still work if you should need a filling. And you can always take Ibuprofen or Tylenol - it is just if you need heavy duty painkillers (I think). Plus a dental appt is usually during the day - and you would probably have taken the nal at the latest early evening .....I hate to say it but do not go looking for problems - all of this never even dawned on me when I was taking nal! I have been told I am a bit of a Pollyanna though..... sorry.....

Your drinking is about on a par with what mine was - and yes isn't it lovely to just stop the worry, take the Nal and carry on as normal? For now I wouldn't worry too much about anything - just let the Nal do it's thing.

Hugs, Maggie x
