Really anxious to get started, I'm currently in an intensive outpatient program,
Learning so much, a lot of it scary, but surprise, still drinking

I can drink what I consider an extreme amount,
over the course of a day, starting after lunch, easily a 12 pack of beer
Is this extreme, are there others here that are similar who have had good results ?

I'm getting too old for this (over 50) and need to change
I've ordered my Naltrexone online, it can't get here fast enough

Is there a book I need to follow or is all the information here ?

thanks

A 12 pack of beer?
I thought you were kidding, but, yes, that's pretty paltry for a lot of people around here. I met a guy recently with a big, bloated, fat, red face who drank over 90 beers a day for years. If you're motivated and of normal biochemistry, you should expect success with TSM, although it's not guaranteed. There's a book you could read "The Cure for Alcoholism" that would provide detailed information, but all you really need to know are the "Four Steps" of the Sinclair Method:

Step One: Take 50mg Naltrexone one hour before the first drink of the day, and never when you're not going to drink
Step Two: Wait an hour.
Step Three: Drink as you normally would (same drinks, same patterns)
Step Four: If you choose to continue to drink in the future, repeat steps one through three every time you drink for the rest of your life (or, "for the foreseeable future")

Since you are so motivated, I would go ahead and order the book from Amazon (or download it to kindle) so you can learn the details of the science behind the method (this will help further your motivation).

Some people find "instant" success with TSM and never overdrink again, others find gradual success over the course of a few months. It's not a magic pill, so remember you have to provide some effort, some self-discipline for this to work most effectively. For some people, only minimal self-control is required (that's been my experience), for others, maximal self-control is required.

Keep posting while you go through with the first stages!

P.S. The fact that you drink beer is also promising, as it has the lowest alcohol content and is the most filling. If you're like a lot of people, you'll find it very, very difficult to drink 12 beers on Naltrexone (it will be akin to drinking 8 slurpees or eating 5 bags of skittles -- they taste good, but you reach a point where "enough is enough"). This is opposed to people who slam a pint of vodka within 5 minutes, which tends to override the Naltrexone.

thanks for the feedback Barry...appreciate it
I will order the book also but thanks for the summary

I will post my progress,
was thinking I need to change my handle though
I picked one that I commonly use and if I'm concerned at all about privacy...

the 12 pack thing...well, I certainly can go past that at times
but lately that's where the guilt really kicks into high gear
(appreciate the levity, you met someone that can drink 90 ? that is incredible)
I would love to gradually bring that down to more of a normal level
(and have more AF days)

Welcome "New Handle",

I am one of the vodka pint slammers Barry is talking about.

(I could slam 1 in 5 minutes and I have basically done that before, however, 99% of my vodka boozing was diluting it with Diet Mountain Dew in a a couple of 7-11 Double Gulps. It actually pissed me off when the double gulp went from 64 oz to 52 oz last year. They still call it a Double Gulp. How is that possible? A Big Gulp has always been 32 oz, and Double Gulp was double that, basically a half gallon. My alcoholic brain gremlin has always told me that by diluting to beer levels would be better for the body. My alcoholic brain gremlin tells me lots of stupid things over the years, and has been talking to me all afternoon. Go away.)

I'm working on getting back to just beer, but it's not easy. I definitely believe in TSM and I can feel a change is coming, even if it is only a little bit at a time.

For comparison, I'm 42, gradually boozing worse and worse since freshman year of high school, now averaging about 18 units worth of booze a day before Naltrexone. Last week I had couple heavy days, but actually only averaged about 7 units. I am pretty excited about that, and I will work to lowering that. However, acknowledging that that my booze gremlin will win some weeks.

Damn Barry, 90 beers a day, quite the glutton. Where did you run into that fellow? Finally a reference to someone boozing harder than me on here. ;)

He's a "frequent flyer" at our ER. If they allowed us to take pictures of patients, I would have done it and posted it online. Besides his face looking red and ready to burst, his abdomen was gigantic and looked uncomfortably tight, and he had a really bad lazy eye. His wife was a mess, too. He was telling me a story of how he was a "competitive drinker." Like Benny Hill, he could open his throat and drink beer at the speed of gravity. I imagine he would have a very, very hard time getting good life insurance.
