i've also understood that nalmefene was developed to overcome the effects that naltrexone has on the liver.

This is a quote from someone else's post I just read. Can those who know more than me tell me about nal's side effects on the liver? I have the book but haven't read it from cover to cover......is it discussed there and if so where?

One of my AA friends (I have never been to AA, but she has and has been sober more than a year now so is very big on it), the only person with whom I have shared face to face that I am taking nal, referred to it as "replacing one drug with another". I dismissed it because I thought nal had minimal side effects.

Just want to make sure I have all the pertinent information. I am not very science minded so some of the book gets me a bit lost.......

Thanks for any help and answers.

as I understand it, Nal at above 300mg/day was shown in one study involving obese patients who already had fatty livers, to cause liver problems. at our 50mg dosage it's perfectly safe

I wouldn't take any notice of your AA friend, it sounds like she's done a good job of learning the AA stock responses ;)

Thank you Badger. Yes you are right about the stock responses. But she was on a bad path so I am glad what she is doing works for her. She is a very very nice person actually and in her defense I did not fully explain TSM to her I just asked her if she had heard of nal and she said that a few people in a rehab she had been in were given it. When I said why didn't you take it as well she came back with the replacing one drug with another response. I just thought I would mention what I am doing to her and if she ever seems to be in need I can share more with her then if she seems receptive. But at the same time I did have one scary blood test where my liver enzymes were elevated so I just wanted to be sure that I am familiar with all the research on nal. That being said, I am up to a full dose tonight AND have to go to a business function that I am not looking forward to where there will be alcohol that normally I lean on heavily to get me through so that will be another interesting experiment. Nal on, everyone and THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN. This forum is pretty quiet so those of you who do have experience and knowledge are like a lifeline, really.

Nal isn't a replacement drug, it doesn't create a state of mind and you don't take it instead of alcohol.

In fact if you don't drink you don't take it.
