Hello there,

Just thought I would give a bit of background on myself first (sorry for the rambling life story!)

Im 26 and have been drinking alcohol for 10-12 years. It started to become problematic about 8 years ago. Right now I have managed to limit my drinking to about once every 2 weeks in a social setting, but my problem is I cannot stop once I start. I could go for a night and it could last couple of days drinking constantly and not remembering anything for large periods. Ive tried everything to help me stop when Ive had enough. Im having a great time after 3 or 4 but theres just something inside me that wants more all the time. I also drink extremely fast and not very pleasant when very drunk.
Ive tried abstinence but its just not a viable option. I live in Ireland and every single social event from weddings to funerals to birthdays to sporting events to normal saturday nights involve drinking. Ive tried not drinking when I socialise but its unbearable.

Having just discovered the Sinclair Method, I have a couple questions about it:

Is it designed for people who drink daily and find it hard to stop or people who drink socially and find it hard to stop?

Does anyone have any experience in Ireland with it? I know doctors here tend to be apprehensive about some medications and can be a bit backward when it comes to treating things like ADHD etc.

Any info would be hugely appreciated. Thanks

Hi Conor, and welcome.

There are other members from your beautiful Isle in this group. They'll chime in before long.

This thread has some good background info:

viewforum.php?f=3

TSM works for both kinds of drinkers you mention. That said, a fair amount of what we know at this point (at the very detailed level) comes from experiences shared on this board rather than hard science.

It's a good sign that you are taking this on so young. Many here believe that the longer we've been drinking, the longer it takes to unwire the drinking reward circuits in our brains.

As for how TSM works for bingers vs daily drinkers, that's harder to say. But there are plenty of both now on the board and plenty of both in the cured/control list (check that out too).

Best wishes!

Hello Conor! Welcome.... TSM works for both daily and binge drinkers. That said, sometimes binge drinkers get frustrated more quickly with the method because they can't seem to gain that elusive control right away, even though they might be drinking fewer days. I get the impression that daily drinkers usually see a reduction in units from the beginning, a lot of the time. But again, like tiller said, not hard science.
I have a story very similar to yours - started TSM about a year ago when I was 28. Had been drinking a lot socially for years, but the past 4 years or so had gotten problematic. I was doing okay limiting the number of times in a week I drank, but would usually drink to drunk/hangover/badness every time I drank. This is no longer really a problem. I'm not quite CURED, but I'm hovering around 15-17 units of alcohol a week usually, with no blackouts or violence or bad behaviour (but yes, probably a hangover every fortnight...)
Good luck!
